A aecond gift, to be received py the Unijersity was from Luella Clay Carson, former professor of English and dean of women at the University. She gave eighty five books, largely in the field of English literature, to the li brary. The draft examinations show that mental and nervous defic iency and instability are as prev elent as tuburculosis and as well worthy of being combated in an organized way. About two per cent of thegenctal population are definately mentally defected, one -half of whom are in need of instutional care. There are in the State of Oregon at least GOOD persons who are definitely men tally defective and there are over 3000 in our state institutions. Miss Esther Lemery and Mr. Rolfe Paquain were married at Seat tle on December 19th. Mrs. Paquain is one of our high school staff and has made a host of friends here who extend their congratulations to the young couple. Mr. Paquain is con nected with the postoffke department in Seattle. Mrs. Paquain returned here on Sunday to finish her school. Ernest Frederickson left on Tues day for Salem where he has secured a position in the Cherry City flour mills. Mrs. Frederickson and the girls will move to Salem later on. Dr. Walker took Mrs. T. V. Cuts forth to Portland last week and placed her under the care of a nerve specialist there. Mrs. Cutsforth has been very ill for several weeks and her many friends here hope she will soon be home again very muc.h im proved.
