SECRETARY o f Agriculture Jardine is not one of those pol iticians engaged in assuring the farmer that it will be possible for him to lift himself over the fence by his boot straps. It is evident from his utterances that while he fully comprehends and sympathizes with 'the grave plight of American agriculture, he realizes that the wav out is thru the general improvement of mar ket conditions, which will come with an improved economic status at home and abroad, an improve ment in the distribution system which the farmer himself can help to provide through cooperation, and the reasonable credit which the government has been and will continue to help him to get. In an authorized statement Sec retary Jardine points out that there are now five thousand co- operative grain marketing asso ciations in the United States and about the same number of coop erative livestock shipping associa tions, and he declares that if ap plied properly, cooperation will make of the American farm in dustry "a big, voluntarily unified, permanently and dependency pro fitable business in a way that no paternalistic legislation could pos sibly do." Dr. Jardine continues: "What we all need to do is to talk less tommyrot, and throw few er monkey wrenches into other people's machinery. We want to stop trying to line up one group against other groups. We want to work together. Americans should be cooperating, not quar reling with each other over the interests of this group or that. "Not by curtailing output, but by increasing it, and securing a fairer share of the price paid by the ultimate consumer for farm products, the farmers of this country will place themselves on a permanently prosperous basis." This is sound sense from one in position to know what he is talk ing about and to have his counsel thoughtfully considered by the American fanner. With good rea son the farmer disbelieves in the good faith of the demagogues who have been trying to fool him into believing that an improvement could be effected in his condition through the application of quack legislative nostrums more injur ious than the disease for which these fake remedies are presented as a cure-all. $-$$ Slowly but surely the scientists are showing that old King Tut wasn't so much after all. It is only a question of time when the laurel wreath will rest on the dome of Doheney. $$$ Palmer Canfield, Prohibition Inspector for New York, would have Washington buy up all the whiskey in bond, and take over its management. He does not openly charge the exist ence of an organized movement to strip the people of their liberty, but he does say reports of such a plot have been broadcast in the press for several years. The people are regulated to death. The responsibility of the home is pushed over on the gov ernment, the work of the church is shifted to the government. The duty of the schools takes the same road. The result is private inter ference and official control of in dividual action to a point that would make the fathers of the na tion froth at the mouth. For every difficulty that arises as a result of our complex civil ization we look for a remedy in the creation of some new board of control. Every phase of busi ness and private activity is put in charge of some bureau or commis sion. These bureaus are given powers far beyond anything ever contemplated by the framers of the constitution. They embrace the legislative, the judicial and the executive functions of gov ernment and rise superior in pow er to the government itself. e are in rather a bad way when we admit the law has brok en down and that our courts are a failure, but we are in a worse way when the people supinely permit Czar-like power to be handed over to bodies of petty dictators, without even so much as a word of objection. s-s-s It will take old Doc Cook long er to get back from Leavenworth than it took him to get back from the pole, but maybe it will be warmer in Kansas. S-S-S Fried for Their Faith Oregon Voter. MY, MY! Those legislators who voted to let the people pass upon the Dennis resolution are being fried. Dennis is to be recalled for having too much faith in how the people might vote. Magladry and Howard are threat ened with the recall. ."Put not your faith in people" should be the legislator's motto when asked to permit the people to decide a controversial question. The odd part of it is that the people so often sustain the measures which legislators submit to the people. Maybe those who are attacking Dennis, Magladry, et al, are not the whole people, after alL May be they are only a noisy minority. It would be queer, wouldn't it, if the people by their vote vindicat ed the legislators for having con fidence enough in the people to let the people pass on so import ant a measure as the Dennis re solve ? S-S-S Olin S. Hodsdon of College Place, Wash., accompanied by Mr$. Hods don, spent a day or ao in Lexington and Heppner, being on their way to The Dalles, where Mr. Hodsdon was on the program for the Easter morn ing service held there Sunday at Pul pit Rock. Mr. Hodsdon's father was an early missionary to the Northwest and had preached from this rock in the early days. Karl L. Beach rushed up to Hepp ner on Monday to spend a short hour or so looking after business matters. He had spent Easter Sunday with his family at Walla Walla, where th boys are students at Whitman col lelge, and enjoyed the very fine East er services of the Congregational church while in that city. Rev. Jas. N. Pendleton, pastor of the Congregational church of Con don, will preach at Bethel Chapel on Sunday, April 19th, at 11:00 o'clock a. m. Cordial invitation extended to all. Mrs. Roirers of Hot. Heppner spent a few days in Portland during the reek. roin U the city on Thursday and returning home Sunday. She was called to the city oh business, and en joyed a nice visit with friends also. State School Superintendent Chur chill spent Tuesday in Heppner, be ing the principal speaker at the meet ing of trie school officers of the coun ty.
