Day Staunch friendships indicate a highly interesting legal battle at the trial of Judge J. J. Day of Oklahoma City for the killing of Lieut. Col Paul W Beck, U. S. Aviation Corps, in the formers home. the only witness was Mrs. Dav, over whom the killing resulted. Fnends for many years, Colonel Beck was a guest in the Day home Returning from driving other bridge party friends home, Judee Day savs he found his wife struggling to free herself from the aviators arms. To save his wife, Day struck Beck over the head with a revolver. The weapon exploded, killing Beck, Colonel Beck was prominent in Brmv circles and in Washington society. Friends insist Beck has been misjudged and will aid in the prosecution of Day. Judge Day is a wealthy oil operator and former member of the Supreme Court Com mission, whose many friends have rushed to his deiense. lessness, but at the same time it may become very dangerous to the public during the hot summer months. Off Water street is an open drainage ditch which is filled with weeds and paper. These things stop the water which should run off a bank into the creek. With fifteen minutes work, this ditch could be cleaned and the water would then flow into the creek. Above the power house and up Wil low creek, old barrels full of stag nant wa;er were found. Everyone knows what happens if a barrel of wie: is left standing very long; it is a good breeding place for mosqui- toes. The mill race which empties into Willow creek is in a condition that should be remedied. The water from the race does not empty into the creek as it should, but it stands in pools and becomes stagnant. The reason for this is that the bank of tne creek is much higher than that at ACCUSE BEAUTY OF THEFT IN CHURCH H. H. S. Biology Class Makes Sanitation Survey i Big Business And You .Some folks have the hazy idea that big busi ness means wealth rolling in through the avenue of 1310 PROFITS. It is not so. Big business is based upon the sound fundamental of safe and sane investment. If it isn't it isn't long known as big business. Take the safest of all interest rates, 4, and put it to work on dollars and it will pile up wealth at an amazing speed. Big business means that more dollars or more men are at work but whether it be dol lars or men they are governed by a safe and sane business fundamentalan honest profit or a reasonable interest return on the investment. I'ut $10 to work for you at 4i and in a very short time it has doubled itself. The more money you put to work the bigger the returns and it is soon BIG BUSINESS. And all the while you will be operating under the safest of all interest rates, 4 Per Cent FARMERS & STOCKGROWERS NATIONAL BANK Editor Gazette-Times: Following is a report written by a committee of the biology class fol loing an informal survey of sanitary conditions in Heppner. The survey was made by the class in connection with their work on the bettering of human environment. The report is submitted as written by the committee. When due allowance is made for the season of the year and the excep tional cases it is still strongly evident that many people are grossly careless in the disposal of garbage and sewer age. Failure to use oil in open toilets and on manure piles results in the breeding of myriads of flies in the summer. The many open sewers running into the dry creek beds and into ditches furnish a dangerous sit uation as regards the spread of ty phoid and other infectious diseases. Information regarding the danger of unsanitary conditions is sufficiently wide-spread these days to prompt serious thinking and action on the committee's report. Yours truly, J. W. HEARD, Instructor. The people of Heppner who have had access to good schools, and have had every chance to know the right from the wrong way of protecting public health, have many good reas ons to be truly ashamed. The follow ing things were seen by the students of the biology class on a small trip about the town; Gunny sacks, boxes, and piles of tin cans were lying open, exposed to the rain which could easily fill them with water; such as this makes a very good place for mosquitoes to breed. In the back door yard of many ot the homes the ground was thoroughly soaked with dish-water and slop which attracts many flies. Many of the alleys were in very filthy condi tion; especially one, where wagon loads of cans, piles of ashes, and heaps of kitchen refuse were found. eggs; plenty of tin cans and other rubbish were oiled around. In one particular back yard there wasi found all kinds of trash mixed to-1 gether. These should be cleaned away, because in the summer a ter-1 rible odor will form, and flies will readily breed. A few more places which should be attended to are near the court house, the public feed yard, and rooming houses west of main street. On a shed which is not more than twenty feet from the kitchen door of a certain home, there is a dead i 1 Li cr ''T 'iBBa- mm J There's many a powerful lesson in the war, which we lately went through. . . . There was days that had history guessin' and hell, that was horribly new. . . . And now, that the holocaust's over, we find there's a pain in our head, with many a wound to recover, and many a men ace to dread. . . . But we'll find, that the champion garroter, is a hitherto, un-listed class. It's the one-eyed politikle .voter, that don't know a crook from an ass. COXEY WANTS ACTION OR ANOTHER ARMY Jacob S. Coxey, who years ago lead an army of unemployed into Washington demanding jobs, is active again. This time he has an idea of how Uncle Sam should op erate the merchant marine. Through Congressmen of his own State, Ohio, Gen. Coxey has four bills be fore congress. If they are not acted upon he says he will lead another army on the capital. rabbit which from all outward ap pearance has been there for some time. A dead chicken and a dead cat were found in another yard and have evidently been there for some time. Dead skeletons should not be left lying around, especially those of dead animals such as a skeleton of a calf which has been there for some time. Mrs. Catherine Fitzhugh, daugh ter of William Bruce Fennell, for mer Governor of Virginia, has been arraigned in a New York court charged with having stolen a hand bag from a woman worshipper in the church of St. Mary the Virgin. Eight witnesses appeared against her. It was also noticed that some people throw their dish-water and table scraps into the back yard. This gives off a filthy odor and many disease germs. In many places it was notic ed that the sewerage from the cess pool runs through a pipe to the top of the ground, then through a small ditch to the creek. If this is not cleaned, mosquitoes will breed and carry typhoid. In one part of town a barn lot was noticed which has a tery large pile of manure in it. It looked as if it had been there for some time, and flies have probably bred there. The manure should be hauled away or spread over the ground to be plowed under. There are several other places near the center of town that have very dirty barn lots. The manure has undoubtedly been there for some time and flies may easily breed. The city's feed yard needs much improvement. It is covered with manure all year long; this makes a very good place for flies to breed during the summer. Some one should be employed to take care of this and keep it clean. Manure, which looked as if it had been there for an unreasonable length of time, was piled around many barns. These places should be cleaned, because they are very unhealthful and most any kind of disease may start. Oil should be placed on the manure to keep the flies from breeding. Many open toilets were found, which could he bettre cared for. They should be carefully built, and oils or lime should be used in them. The machinery in the Farmers El evator is not guarded so as to pre vent injuries is unguarded crushed into pieces. Either a screen or an iron railing should be placed around it. Then, if a person should happen to fall, he would fall against the guard and not reach the wheel. COTTON QUEEN WANTS ,SEAT IN CONGRESS Mrs. l.elia Seton tdmundson. an Alabama woman, wants to throw her strength with the Farm Bloc in Congress. She has announced her self candidate from her district, her object, she says, being to interest the government Jii our farms and farmers. Mrs. F-dmundson i known s the "Cotton Queen of the South." She owns and personally manages a 1.600-acre plantation near Decatur, Ala. The people of Heppner seem to be In another alley, a post had been the very careless about the drainage of target of manv well-directed rotten their town. Perhaps it is only tnor the mill; and without a strong force the water cannot go over the bank into the creek. A number of pools were found in different parts of the town. Perhaps they are ditches fill ed with rain water that has no way to be removed except by the aid of the sun.- These ditches should be filled with dirt and rock. If careful attention were given to these things, there would be no chance for the many mosquitoes to breed in the town. .In the district above the power house very dirty chicken yards and two pig pens were found. The chick cn yards near one of the city's sourc es of food supply look as if they had not been cleaned for some time. The chicken yard belonging to one of the cities main sources of food supply is not as clean as it should be. It is in the center of town, and rotting food is lying about the yard in con siderable quantities. Hies will go all over town in all directions car rying filth and disease. Along the street from the school house to the court house are chicken yards that need cleaning to prevent the breed ine of flies. A sewer was noted which at one time was a basement. The top has caved in, and the sewerage from the home runs into it, which makes an excellent breeding place for mosqui toes and a good place for disease to start. A tight cover should be placed over the top, and a pipe lead ing to the creek should be installed. I ( SWOO! MOW CAN I ) J fl'LL 6ET THIS PAKE AMP . ) HftMF mAKE GARDEN f CRACK "EA OVER. MA. MATTHEWS D.D..LL. D. GUILTY PREACHERS The Christian pulpit is the highest place on earth. It is the only untrammeled, unpurchas able throne in the world. The rreache'-. if he be a real preacher is God-called, God-filled, divinely titted, and supernaturlly commis sioned. His authority and mes sage are of supernatural origin. Therefore, he is decreed to be a leader. If he meets these divine requirements he is an expert in his exalted position. When ever a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and His vicarious death steps out of this exalted place and fails to perform his duty as a courageous leader fnd fearless defender of the faith delivered fcnee for all to the saints, he be comes guilty and must b? held re sponsible for all the ills that result from his failure. There are ministers who have, no doubt, stepped from this high responsible place and they are therefore guilty of all the evils of the country that have come as a direct result of their actions. Such ministers are chargeable with the following defects: First: Laziness. They do not work, not even half time. Their sermons show it. Their fences are down. Their churches are un organized. They do not take any part in the civic life of their com munities. - Second: They are cowards. They are afraid to speak plainly, pointedly, and persistently against the sins of their members. They are far from being like John the Baptist. They do not demand respect and attention from men because they do not meet men and challenge them in their evil do ings. They do not stand like brave men should stand face to face with a guilty brother and accuse him. Third: Busy Idleness. They I'll m .. . t i a u,i If 1 are engaged in attending pink teas, and foolish female functions, whereas they should be in the marts of trade, n the floors of as semblies and lodges, business and political meetings, and social gath erings where men live and where they could stand on the floors of such meetings, expose evil, de fend virtue, and advocate right eousness. Fourth: Infidelity. They have yielded to the Goddess of Heresy, ind have made a direct attack upon the infallible Word of God md the blood atonement of Jesus Christ. Such men are undermin ing the faith of the young and un sophisticated saints and are send ing thousands adrift into skepti cism and sin. They are drawing salaries fraudulently because they contracted to preach the infallible Word of God and the vicarious atonement of Jesus Christ. They are preaching something else. Therefore, such conduct is dis honest. Such men are largely re sponsible for the rise of the in famous cults and the spread of ir reverence, frivolity, impropriety, domestic infidelity, religious infi delity, apostasy, and general social criminality, If the preachers were preach ing faithfully, fearlessly, courage ously, the whole Gospel of Jesus Christ and were exposing crime, demanding confession, and bring ing men face to face with the judgment of their deeds, the crime wave of this country would subside at once, and a great revival of religion would begin. The pettifogging, heretical, spineless, rationalistic, infidel ic preachers of the country are re sponsible for the social conditions of this land. Heppner Oregon J . c
