G. A. Bleakman, Hardman, Ore. Paid Advertisement. For Representative. I hereby announce myself as a candidate for the nomination to the office of joint representative for Morrow and Umatila counties in the Oregon Legislature, subject to the will of the Republicans of the two counties, to be expressed at the Pri maries in May, 1922. J. Perry Conder, Heppner, Ore. Paid Advertisement. For Representative. I hereby announce myself as a candidate for the office of Joint Rep resentative of Umatilla and Morrow counties, on the Republican ticket. If elected I promise to faithfully and honestly perform the duties of the office, working at all time for the best interests of the people of this district and the state of Oregon. E. M. Hulden. Paid Advertisement. For Joint Representative. I hereby announce my candidacy on the Republican ticket for Joint Representative of the District of Mor row and Umatilla Counties in the May primaries. I have lived in Uma tilla county 24 years and own prop erty in both counties. I was a mem ber of the 1919, or War Sesson, and the specal session of 1920 of the Ore gon Legislature and otherwise have devoted much time to public matters, I have no platform, except to offer the best judgment I have and to pur sue a conservative and economic course. I believe in applying strict business methods to public matters When we can pay for public develop ment we should have betterments, but when taxes grow burdensome we must be content with the old ways un til we can do better. Just now taxes must be trimmed wherever possible and no new appropriations made; and the pressing need of the farmer and stockman must be the main issue in law making and in the sphere of public influence. E. P. Dodd, Hermiston, Ore. Paid Advertisement. For County Commissioner. After being urged by citizens and taxpayers in all parts of the county to anounce myself as a candidate for the nomination for County Cmmis- sioner, I have decided to do so and will be a candidate for such nomina tion on the Democratic ticket at the coming primaries. I have been a taxpayer here since before Morrow county was organized. I have no platform to announce nor promises tc make only that, if elected, I will endeavor to serve the people of the county to the best of my ability. R. L. Benge. Paid Advertisement. Farm Notes For Eastern Oregon Ecgs Shot Low Fertility. Poultrymen should not be discour aged by poor fertility in the hatching eggs this spring. Eggs at the college have not hatched as high a percent age as usual, the second hatch being even worse than the first. The poor fertility is undoubtedly due to the cold, changeable weather. O. A. C. Experiment station. Cutworms Relish Poison Bait. One of hte most injurious forms of cutworms in Oregon passes the win ter in the soil as partly grown cater pillars. After the plowing is done in the spring there is no feed left for them and they develop a wonderful appetite for early set plants or sprout ing crops. To avert this injury broad cast the standard cutworm poison over the ground some time between the plowing and the appearance of the crop above the ground. Fifteen pounds per acre is sufficient for the worst infestation. The poison mix ture calls for bran, 50 pounds, cal cium arsenate, lead arsenate, or pans geen, 2 pounds, and 1 gallon of mo lasses. Add water to make a crumbly mash, being careful not to get it too moist to scatter well. Lambing Sheds Pay. Stockmen who provide lambing sheds for the ewes and fenced pas tures for the cows are finding it a profitable investment. Oliver Broth ers of John Day made a lambing per centage of 121 last year with 3000 ewes, and succeeded in getting a 90 per cent calf crop. The ewes were all lambed in the sheds, and the cows were bred in fenced pastures before turning on the range. 0. A. C. Ex periment station. Beat the Cheat. Established fields of alfalfa are benefitted by thorough spring culti vation. An alfalfa cultivator, a spring tooih harrow, or a hoe drill may be ued for the work, or even a disc har row if some of the others are avail able. A four inch cultivation should be given in order to tear out all grass and weeds. Cheat grass, also call ed needle grass or devil grass, and fox tail are ruining the sale of much Inland Empire alfalfa. Cultivation will destroy this grass and induce bigger yields of alfalfa of a better WHY Home Trade Falls Off IT ALWAYS SLUMPS WHEN BUSINESS IS UNBUSINESSLIKE. Most business men have this failing they are swept off their feet when business booms. We hit prosperity. Then starts the trouble. Every body buys everything in sight and the merchants are caught in their own trap. They start advertis ing to beat the band. A riot of selling follows, the merchants OVEK ADVERTISE and OVERSELL THE MARKET. Demand for goods keeps up and then comes the trip to the bank to borrow for ex pansion. Then whatf Shortage and rising prices a riot of buying before prices tilt to the top and a wild spree of advertising to keep the game going. Suddenly there comes a halt Buying slows up, and timid unbusinesslike merchants curtail adver tising and the buying halt continues. Then adver tising is stopped and business becomes stagnant. When trade needs no stimulus the merchants buy space like drunken sailors, but when trade needs a strong push, they contract If business spent one-third the money in adver tising when trade is booming and three times the money when trade is poor, business would find stability. NOW IS THE TIME TO ADVERTISE EXTENSIVELY. Don't throw chips on a blazing fire. The wood is needed when the fire is low. Advertising now means a real service to the buying public. The people want to know where and what they can buy economically. MERCHANTS GET BUSY. MAKE YOUR DRIVE NOW. quality. Bees Are Hungry. The protracted winter has exhaust ed the supply of honey in many of the hives as the stores were not plen tiful in many cases last fall. A loss of 30 per cent is reported by one eastern Oregon beekeeper who fail ed to watch his hives closely enough and supply extra feed. If a sirup of two parts sugar to one of water is given the bees there need be no loss of stands. O. A. E. Experiment station. F. G. Malory, blacksmith from Morgan was a Cecil visitor on Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. Zenneth Logan of Mountview ranch spent Sunday with their Cecil friends. A. Henriksen of Willow Creek ranch left on the local for Pendle ton on Wednesday. Ahalt, Fred Buchanan, Har old Ahalt and Dick Logan spent Sun day in Cecil amongst their old friends before leaving for their re spective homes in lone. Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Noble returned to Rhea Siding Saturday. We are glad to say they have both recovered from their recent illness which de layed them in Portland for several weeks. George now drives a fine Mitchell car. Everyone is busy preparing for their spring work for we imagine it has arrived at last. A heavy rain fell on Thursday night, March 9, which has stopped "Wid" Palmateer of Windynook from having a roof put on his new barn till later on. Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Henriksen of Strawberry ranch were visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hynd at Butterby Flats on Wednesday. George is the busiest man on Willow creek and will be all along if his strawberries and dairy come up to his expecta tions. Al Troedson from his ranch near Morgan was doing business in Cecil on Sunday. We heard it rumored that Al and Wid "the leading lights of Morgan" are now willing to allow Cecil to aspire to become the lead ing town of the state of Oregon. Al and Wid have promised on their honor not to lift a helping hand to assist Cecil in reaching her goal. We wonder which other sheepman can show amongst his lambs of the 1922 season a lamb to equal one born March 10, 1922, at Butterby Flats. It turned the scales at eighteen and one half pounds. The mother is a Rambouillet and Jack Hynd says it is a beauty. This is no moonshine tale either for when we drink in Ce cil we don't see snakes nor impossi bilities either.
