For Joint Representative.
I hereby announce my candidacy
on the Republican ticket for Joint
Representative of the District of Mor
row and Umatilla Counties in the
May primaries. I have lived in Uma

ber of the 1919, or War Sesson, and
the specal session of 1920 of the Ore
gon Legislature and otherwise have
devoted much time to public matters,
I have no platform, except to offer
the best judgment I have and to pur
sue a conservative and economic
course. I believe in applying strict
business methods to public matters
When we can pay for public develop
ment we should have betterments,
but when taxes grow burdensome we
must be content with the old ways un
til we can do better. Just now taxes
must be trimmed wherever possible
and no new appropriations made;
and the pressing need of the farmer
and stockman must be the main issue
in law making and in the sphere of
public influence.

Ecgs Shot Low Fertility.
Poultrymen should not be discour
aged by poor fertility in the hatching
eggs this spring. Eggs at the college
have not hatched as high a percent
age as usual, the second hatch being
even worse than the first. The poor
fertility is undoubtedly due to the
cold, changeable weather. O. A. C.

Cutworms Relish Poison Bait.
One of hte most injurious forms of
cutworms in Oregon passes the win
ter in the soil as partly grown cater
pillars. After the plowing is done
in the spring there is no feed left for
them and they develop a wonderful
appetite for early set plants or sprout
ing crops. To avert this injury broad
cast the standard cutworm poison
over the ground some time between
the plowing and the appearance of
the crop above the ground. Fifteen
pounds per acre is sufficient for the
worst infestation. The poison mix
ture calls for bran, 50 pounds, cal
cium arsenate, lead arsenate, or pans
geen, 2 pounds, and 1 gallon of mo
lasses. Add water to make a crumbly
mash, being careful not to get it too
moist to scatter well.
Lambing Sheds Pay.
Stockmen who provide lambing
sheds for the ewes and fenced pas
tures for the cows are finding it a
profitable investment. Oliver Broth
ers of John Day made a lambing per
centage of 121 last year with 3000
ewes, and succeeded in getting a
90 per cent calf crop. The ewes were
all lambed in the sheds, and the cows
were bred in fenced pastures before
turning on the range. 0. A. C. Ex

Beat the Cheat.
Established fields of alfalfa are
benefitted by thorough spring culti
vation. An alfalfa cultivator, a spring
tooih harrow, or a hoe drill may be
ued for the work, or even a disc har
row if some of the others are avail
able. A four inch cultivation should
be given in order to tear out all grass
and weeds. Cheat grass, also call
ed needle grass or devil grass, and
fox tail are ruining the sale of much
Inland Empire alfalfa. Cultivation
will destroy this grass and induce
bigger yields of alfalfa of a better
WHY
Home Trade Falls Off
IT ALWAYS SLUMPS WHEN BUSINESS
IS UNBUSINESSLIKE.
Most business men have this failing they are
swept off their feet when business booms.
We hit prosperity. Then starts the trouble. Every
body buys everything in sight and the merchants
are caught in their own trap. They start advertis
ing to beat the band. A riot of selling follows, the
merchants OVEK ADVERTISE and OVERSELL
THE MARKET. Demand for goods keeps up and
then comes the trip to the bank to borrow for ex
pansion. Then whatf Shortage and rising prices a riot
of buying before prices tilt to the top and a wild
spree of advertising to keep the game going.
Suddenly there comes a halt Buying slows up,
and timid unbusinesslike merchants curtail adver
tising and the buying halt continues. Then adver
tising is stopped and business becomes stagnant.
When trade needs no stimulus the merchants buy
space like drunken sailors, but when trade needs
a strong push, they contract
If business spent one-third the money in adver
tising when trade is booming and three times the
money when trade is poor, business would find
stability.
NOW IS THE TIME TO ADVERTISE
EXTENSIVELY.
Don't throw chips on a blazing fire. The wood is
needed when the fire is low. Advertising now
means a real service to the buying public. The
people want to know where and what they can buy
economically.
