Repogle, states at torney, who Is hot on the trail of ' ths traitors to clean American baseball. He Is one of the leading figures who have led tn the recent Investigation which has un earthed the greatest baseball scandal In history. 1 It has often proved true that destitution and want In the ex treme are the opening of the very channels to success. Such was the case of Mrs. Margaret Annex, who about 20 year ago was left a widow with six small children, with only a section of arid land In New Mexico as a means of support Today she Is the prottd owner of 3500 pure bred Angora goats, which she has made a business of breeding. Mrs. Armer says her success Is due to a thorough understanding of the goat Industry and the ability to make quick decisions In purchasing desirable founda tion stock. Some of her sires have gone as tar as Booth Africa and New Zealand. Three hundred bucks and dams are auctioned each year, few selling for less than fSOO each. The country la having aundant op portunity to size up Mr. Franklin D. Roosevelt. If the Democratic nomi nee's tour is having any effect at all It Is to offer proof to the Nation that he Is a veritable light weight in states -manBhinp. So generally has he made this impression during his first week's speaking trip into the West that Dem ocratic politicians are sending requests to the party management to muzzle the young man before he seals the party'.. b doom. Albany Herald. even if willing, unless ha has the co operation of Congress, neither can Con gress do anything unless the dominat ing in same Is one of conservative ability which is practically found only In the ranks of the Republican party. Pacific Record-Herald, Medford-Ash-land. . Reminder to Cox. Governor Cox should remember while condemning the Republican campaign fund, that he himself is the first mil lionaire ever nominated for the presi-1 dency. Sheridan Sun. ! Vnworlhy of High Places. A campaign of mud slinging for the presidency l unspeakably disgusting, and the candidate who engages In it is unworthy of the exalted position to which he aspires. This Is a, time when the people should sit in calm Judgment of the candidates and select one wor thy to lead and direct, to quiet the pulse of an overwrought nation; to steer a direct course through the fluc tuating fancies of the crowd. This is the man we want a leader with con victions, not a follower with mad am bitions. Salem Statesman. The Issue Clearly Joined. ' The issue of the campaign is clearly Joined. Wilson and Wllsonlsm is Just as much an issue in the 1920 campaign as It would have been were Mr. Wilson ' the Democratic nominee for President. ; It now remains to be seen if the other discordant elements In the Demochatlc party relish the' situation. Baker Her aid. Valne of Republican Senate to People, Practically everyone Is tired of the "wiggle and .wobble" which has caused so much dissatisfaction all over the country, yet few people seem to ap preciate the real necessity of the Unit ed States having a Republiean senate. America wants to "GO ON." We have waited long enough and we ought to know by this time, if we are to hold our place in the sun,' we must have an administration of our Government which is both constructive and sound and one to which tranquility att home Is of more value than peace abroad. We cannot have this kind of a gov ernment unless we see to It that tti Senate of the United States is under Republican control, A President cannot flo anything,. Don't Hobble the New President. The same arguments which resolve men and women to vote for Harding should lead them to vote for a Repub lican Senator. If they allow personal preference or belief that the Demo cratic candidate Is "a good man" to lead them to vote for him, they will go far to nullify the good effect of their vote for a Republican president. To elect a Democratic senate would be to hobble the president. Oregonlan. Cox la Desperate. Rumors are rife In the eastern press that the democrats are about to stage a break between President Wilson and Candidate Cox in the eleventh-hour effort to save the democratic candidate from the terrific handicap of "Wilson Ism," which, like a thorn under the saddle-weights, is goading Cox to des peration. It is freely admitted by dem ocrats that Wilson is Cox's "old man of the sea," and ,they believe that the political Slnbad of Ohio must rid him self of the Wilson Incubus If anything Is to be salvaged from the wrecks of democratic hopes. Lebanon Criterion. Are They ReneKadref Another thing, do the twenty-one senators of the Democratic party who voted for the Lodge amendments to the League of Nations represent the Democratic- party or any portion of It, or are they renegades? That is an inquiry from a friend at the writer's elbow. In the list is the name of Senator Phelan of California. Are these men Democrats? What Is their position in the eyes of President Wilson and Mr. Cox? The people are perplexed when rep resentatlvea of a party take contradic tory action on a vital question. The twenty-one senators cnlllpg themselves Democrats should square themselves with their party loaders. Salem States man. What Ilrjan Said of Cax. . To remind some of the Democrats ,of what their "1'eerlesa Leader" thinks of their candidate for president, the following was -said of him by W. J. Bryan at San Krancleco when appro ached by some of. the Cox leaders while the convention was In progress: "Cox's nomination would make the Democratic party the leader of the law less element of the country and his election, If such a thing were possible, would turn the White House over to those who defy the government and hold law in contempt. There is no chance of his election If nominated, but why should any democrat be wil ling to support a man whose nomina tion woujd insuy the conscience of the nation." Dufur Dispatch.
