SHOULD WOMEN SERVE ON JURIES The Woman Under Oath" Offers Re. markable Instance of This Mod ern Question. Too Many Holidays. The move is finally under way to abolish a few of our numerous holi days. The old saying that "every day will be Sunday by and by" should have been, "every day will be a holi day after awhile." Oregon has a number of holidays, but there are other states observing more. Yet there is one day, observed universally which is the most useless and senseless of all of them and that is New Years. more." But with the holidays com ing at their regular intervals and bringing with them the opportunity to spend more and work less, how can we prectice industry, economy and thrift? An Editorial for Our Boys About Robinson Crusoe. No doubt many of the boys of Heppner received Robinson Crusoe as a Christmas present, and now they have had a chance to read the book, the editor thinks they'd like to know some facts about the original exile, vhose adventures DeFoe made into the story "Robinson Crusoe." For many years people have thought an English sailor named Sel kirk, who lived alone four years on Juan Fernandez Island, was the character in real life. Francis Arnold, a writer who has investigated for the Boy Scout's Magazine, says a Portu gese sailor named Fernan Lopez was the real Crusoe and the island was St. Helena where Napoleon was im prisoned many years later. "The adventures of Lopez on his lonely island," says Arnold, "have much more in common with the story of Robinson Crusoe than those oi Selkirk. The Portugese exile lived alone on his island more than thirty years, while Selkirk was exiled for only about four. Lopez again shared his exile with a black stave, which may well have suggested Friday to DeFoe. He carried ashore a rooster intended for food, which however he Why do we observe New Years as made a pet, and this seems to have a holiday? The long exile was broken by a trip to Europe when Lopez was given a remarkable reception not only in Portugal but in Italy as well. "After his rescue Selkirk was con tent to remain in England. Lopet voluntarily returned to St. Helena where he lived alone for more than twenty years. From all the evidence it seems that DeFoe borrowed freely from the adventures of Lopez rather than those of Selkirk." The fair sex is already admissible to jury duty in certain states of the Union and agitation along these lines is rife in other states. Is a woman tempermentally fitted for service on a jury in a criminal case? Does feminine intuition make females better arbiters than men? Will that intuition which women are conceded to possess in high degree prove a surer and safer guide than mere masculine logic? What would i happen were a lone woman juror, ' holding out against the opinion of eleven male co-jurors, to find herself , bullied, brow-beaten, harangued and j almost third.degreed? j These and similar questions nat-! urally arise in connection with Flo- rence Reed's latest United screen ve-; hide, The Woman Under Oath, which j presents the remarkable case of the first woman juror appointed in a cer tain state. The subject is timely, pub lic, and particularly of feminine in terest. This latest form of feminine activ ity opens up to Florence Reed a novel role which at once provides that emo tional actress wide scope for her un doubted histrionic powers and forms the basis of one of the most power ful screen dramas of recent times. With Miss Reed's recent successes, The Wives of Men, and Her Code of Honor, fresh in the minds of local picture patrons, record breaking at tendances are expected for the en. gagement of The Woman Under Oath si the Star Theater. Essex success has not been accidental. No one doubts its right to the position it holds. On the Cincinnati Speedway, a stock chassis Essex set the world 50-hour en durance mark, of 3037 miles, under Am erican Automobile Association supervis ion. Another stock Essex holds the un equalled 24-hour road mark of 1061 miles. But how many know why Essex in its first year revealed qualities more mature, more evident of the influence of long ex perience, than is commonly found in cars even in their third or fourth year. You will recall the Essex was announc ed one year ago without one word as to the identity of its builders. Not a claim was made for its performance. You were asked to go look at it, take a ride and form your own opinion. The Essex was required to speak for itself. Now that it has established itself, it is revealed why Essex has all the qualities of cars of long development. Was Designed by Hudson Engineers They conceived it as they developed the Super-Six. All they learned about en durance, they incorporated in the Essex. They gave to the Essex the power that has made it famous in all quarters. Its speed is the result of what had been learned in making the Super-Six winner of all worth while speed records. The Essex cap never be all that the Super-Six is for they are totally different types. But the Essex does bring quality and performance to a class field that was un known. The former owners of large costly cars that have adopted the Essex have not been Hudson users. They have come from other cars, cars that fall short of the Super-Six in all particulars save size and cost. The Essex appeals to such users be cause of its nimbleness. They like the way its performance compares with that of the Super-Six. You can see this on every hand. The two cars in any com munity that are most prominent because of their performance ability are the Hud son Super-Six and the Essex. Essqx Did Not Need ' Hudson's Endorsement Think of the advantages Essex has had. What ordinarily would have re quired years to perfect was made possi ble in the very first model. That is why 20,000 are now running, why more than $30,000,000.00 wa3 paid for Essex cars in ten months. You have not needed the Hudson en dorsement to understand Essex perform ance. Essex has won its own way. Hudson gave it full benefit of the experience of its engineers and the ability of its manu facturing organization. Its name was not needed. Now Hudson takes the same pride in acknowledging its kinship to Essex that a father might in speaking of his son who on his own account has made good.
