In fact California is still having that same old problem to wrestle with, but she has company now. Oregon Is be ginning to feel the effect of Oriental immigration and the menace is be coming so great in the Hood River Valley that an organization has been formed there to prevent the menace from becoming greater. The new organization is known as The Hood River Valley Association for the Prevention of Japanese Land Ownership. At the init'al meeting of the organization, the 38 members present signed a pledge against sell ing or leasing to Japanese. The formal pledge of members of the anti-Japanese association follows: Believing that the rapidly-increas ing Japanese ownership of land In Hood River valley menaces our wel fare and threatens ultimate domina tion of our homeland by Asiatics I herewith apply for membership in an association to be formed and pledge myself as follows: That America should be preserved and protected for Americans; that no child born in this country should be come a citizen unless his parents be long to a race eligible tu citizenship; that no one but a natural-born or fully naturalized citizen should be al lowed to own or lease land; that the Immigration of Asiatics to the Unit ed states should be prohibited. IV,., Ft j ARTESIAN WELL STRUCK Wade & Bowers, Drilling For Martin Bohm, Get Honing Well At 116 Feet. Morrow county has another arte sian well. The latest addition Is on the Martin Behm ranch, 10 miles north of lone and a half mile west of Wells Springs. Messrs. Wade and Bowers, well drillers, announce that they have a flowing well on the Behm place after going down a depth of 116 feet. Water Is flowing at the rate of 12 gallons per minute from an uncased hole and it is expected that the flow will be very materially increased aft er the well has been cased, as tht water is now free to escape in the crevices and soil above the rock for mation. Have Learned In Last Two Years About Culling Flocks Oregon Agricultural College, Cor- vallis. SeDt. 10. Poultrymen have learned more in the last two years about culling nonproductive poultry than in the previous 60 pearB, in the opinion of James Dryden, professor of poultry husbandry at the college. If the nonlayers are culled out the coBt of producing eggs falls mater ially. Now is a good time to cull. The following are conditions which Indicate noproductlveness: SUrlvled condition of the comb, wattles, and ear lobes; closeness" of pelvic bones, and keel bone, contracted or harden ed condition of the abdomen; yellow shanks and beak In breeds that nat urally have vellow shanks and beak such as the leghorns wd Plymouth rocks; molting of feathers. The best breeding hens may be selected by noting from October 15 to November 15 the following char acteristics: Inrnmnlete molt, red comb and wattleB, and bright eyes; well-spread nelvie bones, good depth from pelvic bones to keel bone and soft abdomen; pale shanks and beak and vent among breeds that have naturally yellow skin and shanks. U. S. S. Great Northern Makes Eecord for Trip The U. 8. 8. Great Northern, form erly on the Pacific Coast run be tween San Francisco and Portland, Cantain Stafford H. R. Doyle, U. S.N., made the round trip from New York to Brest. France, in twelve days, one hnnr an A thirtv-five minutes. This is the best on record for the round trip betwen these ports. The ship made this record on her seventeenth trip. The vovaee commenced at 5:37 p. m. on June 24, when the ship passed Amhrose liehtshiD. At 8:00 a. m. on June 30 the Great Northern met the President's ship, George Wash ington and mail for the President delivered to the destroyer Tar bell for further delivery to the Presi dent. The Great Northern arrived at Rrest nt 9:21 d. m. June SO. Troops and cargo were alongside, having hnen arraneed for by radio. All the trooDS. DaBsengers and car go were taken aboard In five hours and ten minutes and the ship was again under way for New York at s-ai a m on Julv 1. The Great Northern arrived off Ambrose light ship at 7:12 p. ru., completing her TwmArknhle record. The George Washington had over a thirtv-six-hour start on the Great Nnrthnrn from Brest and the Great Northern arrived in New York Just about thirty-six hours ahead of the Oeorge Washington. The Great Northern held the previous record nt a round trln In thirteen days and forty-three minutes. During the war Bhe stood number one in the trans port service, having landed more troops per 1,000 tons than any other shin In tho service. The Great North ern has made a total of 117.356 miles in actual cruising time of about twelve months. The Pacific Legion. Joel Barlow, pioneer farmer of the Eight Mile section, who now makes his home near Oregon City, was called to Heppner this week on ac count of the serious illness of his son, S. A. Barlow. Bert Mason, lone merchant, who will have charge of the Morrow Coun ty Special Train to the Pendleton Round-Up, was In Heppner Monday, working out some of the many details of the big trip. Mr. Mason announ ces that tickets are now on sale at the depot and are selling fast. If you plan to go to Pendleton on the Special, you bad better get your order in for tickets at an early date.
