Soft coal can be burned successfully in base burner stoves by removing the magazine and provid ing an air supply pipe over the top ot the Are and a direct smoke pipe outlet from the top of the stove. Soft coal cannot be burned satisfactorily if fired the same as hard coal. Directions for burning soft coal in base burners have been ordered by B. E. Kennedy, State Director of Conservation, and will be ready for distribution from the office of State Fuel Administrator Fred J. Holmes upon arrival. Common salt will remove soot and tar from the heating surface, flues smoke pipes and chimneys of domes tic heating plants, according to Fuel Administrator Fred J, Holmes. To apply, spread two or three handjfuls of salt on the hottest part of the fire at a time when the fuel bed is bright or incandescent, then close the door and open the drafts. The fur nace will become filled with dense white fumes which will pentrate through the pipes and clean the sooty surfaces. An. application of salt treatment occasionally will keep the heating surfaces in efficient condition. The chemical action will not bo detri mental to the heating plant. Maximum heat at minimum cost Is the natural result ot efficiency In Bring. I A man who is master of his fur nace has tew heat complaints from ! bis family or his tenants. ! A furnace should be something more than a consumer of fuel. Keep the home warm by making it work under proper conditions. Even a lame horse will go far in the mud. A poor man is always safe iu say ing he would not exchange places with his rich neighbor. A cheap pun is remembered after a wise saying is forgotten. Because a man is bald-headed he is not necessarily a "highbrow." The wrong kind of friend will pur sue you most of the days of your life. Babies are queer institutions. They never seem satisfied with what they have and yet they don't want much. Most married men think they did the proposing, but they didn't. Most normal boys have wished to be pirates but you never heard of one that longed to be a food profiteer in war times. The peopre that believe all estates should go to'the state know they will never inherit any money nor leave any. If every day you see "the prettiest girl I ever saw In my life, you re over 45. It might help a lot If, after the war is over and the soldiers are home, the women who have been knitting so Industriously for the sol diers would keep right on knitting for their families. Is there now any place that has a town pump located on the public square, a tincup with holes In it on top to make It so worthless nobody will steal it, and a log trough with moss on it beneath, for the horses? ' OUR WISH FOR YOU IS A Happy and Prosperous Year During 1919 This can be best attained by buying your Groceries of PHELPS GROCERY CO N. B. We have just heceived a large and varied assortment of HOME CANNED FRUITS. It might pay you to look them over A young boy is instinctively truth ful but he doesn't always follow his Instincts. The war may be over but you're not over with the war. Did you ever know any permanent improvement to be made In any situa Hon by criticizing before others th one who was at fault? About all that such criticism does is to anger the subject of it. But there Is still a class of imitation business men wh scold their employes before others thinking it impresses those about hem with their importance. Where the bolsheviks reign, blood pours. Then there is the kind of "educa ted man" who thinks lie has a good library if all the book covers match in color. A great many men who agree in principle with the idea of "women and children first," wish the thiug were not overdone in their own households. The reason you are nut contented with your lot Is because nobody ever was until he became useless. II How Hog Cholera Is Controlled. Through work of the Bureau Animal Industry of the United States Department of Agriculture 6,500,000 hogs were vaccinated against cholera u the last year, and the a rage loss es In cholera-infected herds were re duced to less than 13 per cent by the use of antihog-cholera serum. An Increase of 168 counties working for hog-cholera control Is considered notable, there being 467 counties in the country now engaged in this work, besides 17 SUtes in which activities of this character are con ducted. Representatives of the Federal de partment visited 15,560 farms for the purpose of making Investigations diagnosing disease, and giving advice legarding control and eradication Furthermore, 2066 meetings were attended by 100,190 farmers who were Interested in the control and combating of hog cholera. In addi Hon, 2,236 cholera-Infested farms were cleaned up and disinfected under the direction of the Federal specialists. In order that only the best anti hog-cholera serum may be used actual field work, rigid inspection of all serum is necessary. During the last 12 months, of the 271,402,53 cubic centimeters of serum produced in licensed establishmests, 2,48S,661 cubic centimeters were destroyed as unfit for use. Similar inspection o hog-cholera virus was also conducted tor simultaneous use with the serum.
