The man usually has the name among the neighbors, without any of the powers, a good deal like the kingship of the king of England. About all the world's discord that is not caused by egotism is caused by mental Inability to understand the viewpoint of others. - I Some dav it is going to be a penal ! offense to use the expression "old maid." The world's finest womea characters have been unmarried wo men who have attained discreet years. There is no special merit in just being married any more than I there is In being born or dying, and there may be a great deal of merit in not being married. BERGSTROM, lone, Oregon. lm Married men and these 4E-!3 year-old bachelors are going to wonder at the great change, that has come over their young womin frirrds after "the bovv come homo. ' The reason the mother of a year old baby, understands perfectly what it says is because the baby doesn't and somebody has to. Tho war ended in time to jut about ruin the chances for glory of a lot of men who were getting ready to get into It, if you'll listen to their story. The Dessimist is one who while grudgingly admitting that the weath er is pleasant, prophesies that "we'll make up for it later on. A talkative barber is bound to make cutting remarks. A girl who is a lily before mar riage sometimes continues to be one afterwards a tiger Illy. ' The only reason that publishers have for nutting the pictures of girls' heads on the magazine covers Is be cause the public seems to be more interested In girls than anything else. The wife takes a certain kind of pride, delights to a certain extent in her martyrdom, when she has a o. ..(! . is "fcifrd to get alon;; with," for she is always aesured of the sympathy of other women whose husbands are the same way which means about all other women aud all other husbands. None so blind as they whom preju dice has made sightless. Da vou fullv realize that vour little pet cult or belief is merely amusing or irritating to everybody else except you and your crowd? If you must have freak beliefs, keep them a secret and don t bore sen sible people with them. Probably the main troublo with people is that there are too many of them. It takes a rare genius to be a good money saver and paopular at the same time. When a man starts to fit up an office, the first thing he thinks of is a cuspidor, but a woman always gets a flower vaBe. The reason nobody ever likes to pay taxes or a life insurance premium is because he can't see where the tax money goes and he resents the idea that he has to pay to keep himself alive when he puts up for the insurance premium. We are all creatures of sin and some of us seem mighty proud of it. While a boy Is dreaming of the day when he'll either be a policeman and arroBt. somebody he dosen e line, or a cowboy and travel with a circus, the girl is dreaming of a home filled with servants. I have at my place a dafk Jersey cow, 5 or 6 years of age. Has been about my premises for some two weeks. Is dry now, and a nuisance. No visible marks or brands. 2t MAL CHURCH. Whit Mauldin was down from Stanfield a day or two the past week, returning there on Saturday. He is at work on the ranch of Frank Sloan, near Stanfield and haB charge of the Sloan sheep. GLASS SCORES FOR COUNTRY, EDITORS A man usur.lly gets pretty well along in years before he discovers that the man who rushes wildly about, bumping Into people and al ways in a hurry is not tho one who accomplishes the most in a day. Such a man thinks he's busy when he's only excited. Many a tired mother of screaming, fighting children, wishes she might also enter a peace conference. The hardest thing in the world is to try to appear interested when an acaualntance Is telling you how much money he made last year, while you are trying to figure out where to raise the price of a new overcoat. , You mav not like those you have to associate with, and the chances are the feeling is mutual. If there is anything more foolish than a man in a dry-goods store try ing to do his wife's shopping it Is a bachelor trying to buy a Christmas present for a baby THE NEW HOME. In these days wnen tie foundation under a two-story house is of the thickness of a piece of restaurant pie; and wltn the nickel plate on the bathroom fittings wears about as long as the roofing, it is a pleasure to come across a pioneer housa that was built when men had time to build hotaes for their great grandchildren. You could take one of those old hand-hewn, lumber houses, pinned together with oak plus, and roll it over like a ball; it would suffer no more than the ball from the rolling. Eight and ten-inch timber for walls. Hewn from the live forest, and fitted to place with a cunning loRt tnriav. Houses built as men built ships in olden days, and meant to endure al the old ships of teak and oak en dured. Houses in which the granite fire places showed decay first, with split cedar "shake" roofs that outlast iron. Houses with puncheon floors on which the hobnail heels of six gen erations hardly left a near. A house that became part of the landscape, as fixed as the great oak before it, or the elm beside it, or the 200-year apple tree, that kept ma jestic watch beside it. A house that cradled generations and as sturdily stood off the March tempests in 1900 as it did in 1700. and that gathered to the stour- neart of it some of the warmth and graciousness and sturdy character of the young lovers, and the matronly ' wives, and the upstanuing fathers that abode there. A few of these old houses are left: without repair or paint they will, if left alone, outlast all the present generation of tinder and pasteboard houses,' that have had their inside filled with three-BCore pretty knick knacks of plumbing, and lighting, and heating, and sanitation, and utility, and that admit winter wind and Bummer heat about as freely a the ancient skin tepee of the first Americans. MAKES HIM HOMESICK. "Shut that door!" yoHed the rough man. "Where wore you rained, itt a barn?" The man adreseed meekly and silently complied, but the speak er looking at him a moment later observed that he was in tears. Going over to his victim he apologized. "Oh, come," he said soothingly, "you shouldn't take it to heart be cause I asked if you were raised in a barn." "That's it. that's it," sobbed the other man. "I was raised in a barn and it makes me homesick every time I hear an ass bray." L. L. Van Winkle, wbo farms the Jas. Pointer place near Lexington, was in Heppner Saturday. His family is now fully recovered from a. siege of influenza. tf r! LEGAL NOTICES.
