I have at my place a dafk Jersey
cow, 5 or 6 years of age. Has been
about my premises for some two
weeks. Is dry now, and a nuisance.

Whit Mauldin was down from
Stanfield a day or two the past week,
returning there on Saturday. He is
at work on the ranch of Frank Sloan,
near Stanfield and haB charge of the
Sloan sheep.

The hardest thing in the world is
to try to appear interested when an
acaualntance Is telling you how
much money he made last year,
while you are trying to figure out
where to raise the price of a new
overcoat. ,
You mav not like those you have
to associate with, and the chances
are the feeling is mutual.
If there is anything more foolish
than a man in a dry-goods store try
ing to do his wife's shopping it Is a
bachelor trying to buy a Christmas
present for a baby
THE NEW HOME.
In these days wnen tie foundation
under a two-story house is of the
thickness of a piece of restaurant
pie; and wltn the nickel plate on the
bathroom fittings wears about as
long as the roofing, it is a pleasure
to come across a pioneer housa that
was built when men had time to
build hotaes for their great grandchildren.
You could take one of those old
hand-hewn, lumber houses, pinned
together with oak plus, and roll it
over like a ball; it would suffer no
more than the ball from the rolling.
Eight and ten-inch timber for
walls. Hewn from the live forest,
and fitted to place with a cunning

Houses built as men built ships in
olden days, and meant to endure al
the old ships of teak and oak en
dured. Houses in which the granite fire
places showed decay first, with split
cedar "shake" roofs that outlast
iron.
Houses with puncheon floors on
which the hobnail heels of six gen
erations hardly left a near.
A house that became part of the
landscape, as fixed as the great oak
before it, or the elm beside it, or the
200-year apple tree, that kept ma
jestic watch beside it.
A house that cradled generations
and as sturdily stood off the March
tempests in 1900 as it did in 1700.
and that gathered to the stour- neart
of it some of the warmth and
graciousness and sturdy character of
the young lovers, and the matronly
' wives, and the upstanuing fathers
that abode there.
A few of these old houses are left:
without repair or paint they will, if
left alone, outlast all the present
generation of tinder and pasteboard
houses,' that have had their inside
filled with three-BCore pretty knick
knacks of plumbing, and lighting,
and heating, and sanitation, and
utility, and that admit winter wind
and Bummer heat about as freely a
the ancient skin tepee of the first
Americans.
MAKES HIM HOMESICK.
"Shut that door!" yoHed the rough
man. "Where wore you rained, itt
a barn?" The man adreseed meekly
and silently complied, but the speak
er looking at him a moment later
observed that he was in tears. Going
over to his victim he apologized.
"Oh, come," he said soothingly,
"you shouldn't take it to heart be
cause I asked if you were raised in
a barn."
"That's it. that's it," sobbed the
other man. "I was raised in a barn
and it makes me homesick every
time I hear an ass bray."
L. L. Van Winkle, wbo farms the
Jas. Pointer place near Lexington,
was in Heppner Saturday. His family
is now fully recovered from a. siege
of influenza.
