SWAGGART. v Walter Luckman, Butter creek stockman, and W. G. Hynd, sheep raiser of Sand Hollow, were over Sunday visitors in Heppner. Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Newlon are in from the artesian well belt today. They made a sale of a quadter sec tion of land to Wm. Heubner, one of their neighbors. Mrs. M. Belle Thompson returned to her Portland home on Wednesday. She was accompanied by Miss Geor gia Shipley who will make her home with Mrs. Thompson. Wlllard Herren and W. W. Smead spent a few dayB this week in the mountains on a deer hunt: Some one evidently turned all the bucks loose; they returned empty handed. Ralph Benge arrived from Walla Walla with his family this week and will again take up his residence here. He recently purchased the Oscar Minor place Just below town. Henry Blahm, Willow creek farm er, was in Heppner Saturday and made himself "square" with this shop for another year. Mr. Blahm raised a good crop of wheat this year. Leonard Anderson was in from Gooseberry Saturday getting ac quainted with the recent new arrival in his family. He reports Mrs. An derson and the babe doing nicely. I will be in Heppner during the coming week for the purpose of set tling up all my acocunts. If I owe you anything, kindly look me up. F. M. PARKER. F. M. Parker is down from Walla Walla this week to close up business affairs here. Mr. Parker has secured a nice home at Walla Walla and is well pleased with his new location. Ed Stevens, special agent of the Home Ins. Co. of New York, and own er of the Hanshew ranch on Black horse, was up from Portland this week looking after his Interests here. Frank Glasscock was down from Hardman Saturday. He is living on the Hiram Tash place near Hardman and was making arrangements with Mr. Tash Saturday to extend his lease. Jack Hynd is up from Cecil today. He reports a considerable exchange of real estate down his way the past day or so, owing to the prevoiling high winds. A big rain would be ap preciated. Judge C. C. Patterson returned Tuesday evening from a stay of sev eral weeks at Hot Lake, Oregon. He feels sowemhat Improved in health but was pretty much tired out by tht trip home. J. A. Deardorff was In Heppner to day from his ranch near Echo. This Is the first visit Jack has made to this city in more than four years, or since disposing of his Morrow county place and locating in Umatilla county. David H. Grabill, retired farmer of lone, Is in Heppner today on business connected with the guardianship ot the Jas. Grabill heirs. He has Invest ed in Liberty Bonds for the two boys to the amount of $3000. Mrs. George Stevenson and Mrs. Chas, Corder attended the conven tion of the Degree of Honor in Pen- dlton the past week. Mrs. Corder visited with friends and relatives In Echo on her return home. W. P. McMillan, wheat buyer of Lexington, visited Heppner Saturday. He states that but littlo wheat is be ing sold outright at that point, the most of it being consigned to Port land and drawing the advance of $1.50 per bushel. Benton Bowman, an attorney of Hillsboro, Oregon, was in Heppner on Wednesday on legal business. Mr. Bowman has been a member of the legislature from Washington county during the past two sessions, serving in the lower house. Dr. Purkey and wife made a trip to Pendleton Sunday and on Tuesday afternoon visited Hermlston. They met with trouble on the way home from Hermlston and suffered a break down with their car, reaching Hepp ner at a late hour last evening. WATCH FOR THIS. A public sale of farm implements, stock, etc., will be held within the next two weeks at the Hanshew ranch on Blackhorse, tho definite date of which will be announced in next issue of this paper, as well as by post ers, and the public is asked to watch for the date. The sale will include 14 head of work horses, 9 head of young stock ranging from one-year-olds to three-year-olds, 2 cows, 6 pigs, some 40 tons of rye and wheat hay, straw, Holt combine and a complete equip ment of farming implements. This Is a sale that should interest you. Keep it In mind. Card Socials for Winter Months. The ladies of St. Patrick's Parish Intend holding in the Odd Fellows hall a series of card socials, commenc ing on Saturday, November 3. To the one making the highet total score in all the socials a valuable present will be given. "500" will be played, and refreshments will be served. The admission price will be 25 cents. . An Apron and Cooked Food Sale. The Ladle's Guild of tho Episcopal church will give an apron and cooked food sale on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 31. The articles will be on dis play hi the window of Roy E. Whltets' office, and there you will find many nice and useful, articles. - Putting p Coal Bunkers. The O-W. R. & N. Co. has a crew of men at work at the depot grounds this week, putting in coal bunkers. The sharp advance in the price of fuel oil has compelled the Company to re sort to burning coal again and all oil burners will be replaced with coal grates. The change will take place Just as soon as the exchange can be made. Public Sale of Mules is Called Off. The public sale of mules and mares which was advertised in these col umns to take place on Saturday, Nov. 3, at my place in Clark's Canyon, has been called off. Gammell have gone to Tumalo, Deschutes county, where they expect to remain for at least a couple of months, and perhaps all winter, visiting at the home of their -son, Walter. Waiter Gammell has taken up a tract of land under the irrigation project there and has a good proposition, according to the statement of his father. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Moore, of Lex ington, were visitors in Heppner Sat urday evening and made this office a pleasant call. These young people are farming the Snider place this side of Lexington, and recently lost their residence and. all contents by fire.
