That there la a hidden law of jus tice which rewards virtue and puni shes evil doing is a theme that dra matists have ever been on the alert to use because ot Its universal ap peal. This basic idea has been treat ed in a novel and ingenious manner in the Mutual Masterpicture, De Luxe lEditlon, "The Hidden Law," a five act emotional drama produced by Hor sley which comes to the Star Theatre on Sunday with William Clifford aud Margaret Gibson in the leading roles. The story centers about John Carl ton, a writer who has a play stolen from him by an unscrupulous theat rical manager. He is robbed of his royalties, aud when he attempts to obtain by force what he believes is justly his he is arrested and sentenc ed to prison. At the expiration of his sentence embittered by his harsh experiences he retires to the moun tains where he engages in the life of a "Dick Turpin." He falls in love with Wanda known as the Princess of the mountains. He guards her from all intruders and she looks upon him as a father. She meets a young hunter from the East and experiences her first sensa tions of love. Carlton's life is brought to light and seeing that, his hope of marrying Wanda will not ma terialize he returns East where the success he was robbed of early in his career comes to him as a final reward after his years of struggle. Wanda and her sweetheart stay in the count ry of her childhood. Pretty Margaret Gibson as the mountain princess has a charming and sympathetic role which she plays with all her wonderful ability for true screen characterization. Wil liam Clifford as John Carlton displays his keen sence of fitness to his role and lends dignity and force to his in terpretation. John Oaker as the ju venile is well cast. The Bostock ani mals figure prominently in the pic ture. We are offering one ol the best residences in Heppner at a sacrifice. In graham, Assistant Secretary of War, claims that the Democrats are to he iredited with giving the country the! best Army bill that has ever been passed. "We republicans," said Represpn tative Julius Kahn, of California, ranking minority member of the House Committee on Military Af fairs, "have always contended that the National Defense is not a matter of party politics. Every patriotic cit izen is equally interested in seeing his country properly prepared regardless of political affiliations. "As a matter of fact many of the provisions of the Preparedness law of June 3rd, 1916, were written into the measure by Republicans. This is es pecially true of such provisions as fhose providing for an enlisted re serve corps, for an increased medical corps, for training camps for civil ians, for short term enlistments, for the manufacture of tools and namjc--I'n times of peace so that the supply of ammunition can materially be in ' creased in times of war, for the cre ation of the grade of Aviator which jwfll enable civilians to be commis sioned in the aviation section, and numerous other provisions. "S.i far as the increased strength of ,the Army is concerned, a Democratic I House refused to authorize anything In excess of 140,000 enlisted wn. minimum strength pf the Regular Army. The Republicans constantly insisted on a .larger Regular Army and finally succeeded in raising the strength to a minimum of 178, OOi) men. "The Republicans claim no especial praise for having voted for these splendid features. . They only did their duty to their country and they resent the attempt of Democratic of ficials to claim credit for the legisla tion as a Democratic partlsian measure. Manv candidates running for office have no hesitancy in saying that the state has a multiplicity of laws, the effect of which is to complicate busi ness to the point of inefficiency and that mounting cost of government in dicates the need of calling a halt. Newspaper reports say Great Bri tain is facing general railroad strike or a raise in the employes wages or a decrease in food prtc. It seems that government ownership of rail road lines lias no effect in prevent ing strikes. Prlneville voting $100,000 bonds to aid in financing construction of railroad from main line of Oregon trunk to that city by a vote ot 358 to one, is the greatest advertisement it can give the world that it wants capi tal to come there and invest and that it is willing to hack its invitation with an Investment of its own. for your Rough and Dressed Lumber, Wood and Posts At the Mill or delivered TTTf TTTf TTTT FOR THE MAN WHO CARES Styles of the Times For the ease of a perfect fit, the as surance of correct style and the sat isfaction of long service wear THE FLORSHEIM SHOE "FOR ANY WEAR AND EVERYWHERE" SAM HUGHES COMPANY Ours is lie Store for your gun ana ammunition Ju 1 ihUNTING ON THESE I ! -jOSsff PREMISS BUY A NEW GUN: HUNTING IS FINE SPORT.
