The result of educational work j which has been conducted on victro ;las, player-pianos, pianos and other musical instruments the last few 'years, has been made apparent by an announcement of this well known music house. Additional frontage in the Stearns Building in Portland will be taken over September 15th by Sherman, Clay & Company. This additional space will provide facilities for a greatly enlarged display of victrolas, players, and pianos. Sherman Clay & Company are one of the oldest music houses on the Pacific Coast, having been establish ed in Sau Francisco more than fifty years ago. Practically 1,4U0,00 acres of land in the Appalachian and White Moun tains have been approved under the Weeks Law, which authorized the Government to purchase, for National purposes, lands on the headwaters of navigable streams in these regions. The box industry in the State of Washington uses more than a hun dred million feet of lumber annually and, from the standpoint of material utilized, is the most important se condary wood using industry in the State. Nearly two and half million feet B. M. of Douglas fir is made up into furniture in Oregon every year. Oth er woods used for this purpose and grown in the State are maples, ash, Cottonwood, p.lder, oak, western red cedar, and myrtle. As a result of the land classifica tion of the Angeles National Forest of California, the President signed a proclamation on August 23 elimina ting 99,544 acres from that Forest. The greater portion of the land in volved is already in private owner ship. 6 lots 40x90; 1 lot 50x110; 1 8 room dwelling, woodshed and other outbuildings; 1 5 -room dwelling, woodshed and other outbuildings; 1 barn, used for livery stable, 64x64. The efficiency of the Forest Ser vice telephone line to the summit of Mount Hood was demonstrated last week when W. D. Scott, Division Equipment Engineer of the Pacific Telegraph & Telephone Company, vi sited the Mount Hood lookout station and conversed with S. H. Hess, Trans mission Engineer, at San Francisco, California, a distance of 900 miles horizontally and nearly two miles vertically. The results of the test were so sat isfactory that plans are being made for a test telephone conversation be tween the lookout on Mount Hood and the Forester, Washington, D. C. Officials of both the Forest Service and the Telephone Company say that such a conversation can be success fully carried on. Linn County will have 200 miles County highways in five years. Portland Anton Huth, Tacoma, to erect 5-story building here. Boardman A new eastern Oregon town with a promising future. Detroit Mich, milk condensery firm wishes to locate plant in Oregon. Myrtle Creek voted $21,000 bonds to provide light and water system. Roseburg Two Portland firms have bids on the Kendall railroad. Kenton Swift Packing interests spending $150,000 on packing plant. The S. P. Co. spends eleven mil lions building a railroad to Coos Bay. Ten Mile, Coos County, logging plant opens operations to run four years. Portland American Can Co. tak ing bids on $250,000 factory on Rail road Avenue. The forest reserves return $78,000 to the state for roads. The $78,000 probably cost the state $780,000. The Lumber mills in Baker are running full blast and payrolls run into many thousands of dollars monthly. There was but one bidder for the franchise over the Interstate bridge at Vancouver the P. H. L. & P. Co. The traction company is not offering much to jitney competition. Astoria Pay increases affecting nealy 600 men in th emplov of the North Bank system are announced, the increases ranging from 5 to 10 per cent of former salary allowances, effective for August. Bend Bulletin The common peo ple who in the end must pay the price may well give the so-called People's Land and Loan Measure careful con sideration until election day and then give it the "once over." Albany Herald After giving their hearty sympathy to the railroad men in their fight for an eight hour law, millions ofi our housewives would probably be pleased to see their hours reduced to twelve. Bandon Western World Coos County tax collection increased from 1904 to 1915 from $110,286 to $409, 527, 300 per cent. State taxes in creased from $20,807 to $90,081 In 1913. For 1914 State tax went down to $65,675, and 1915 to $56,564. There are in Oregon 32 projects for reclamation of desert land, cov ering 1,109,599 acres, and total a mount of money needed to complete them is $54,644,000. There are 2, 000,000 acres of so-called desert lands in the state which may be re claimed to furnish homes for many people. But the trouble is, Oregon's share of the reclamation fund Is spent in other states. A. R.
