Western Oil Wins on Duncan Hill.

' "One of the most significant fea
tures connected with the sensational
Duncan Street hill-climbing contest
pulled off In San Francisco recently,
and the feature that probably means
most to Pacific Coast motorists," said
District Sales Manager of the Stand
ard Oil Company, "is the fact tlint,
with a few exceptions, the cars that
negotiated that now famous fifty per
cent grade, had their crank-cases fil
ed with oil made from western as-phalt-base
crude.
"Every prospective car buyer in
that neck of the woods had his eyei
on the machines that went out to
conquer Duncan hill. And no one
was more awake to that fact than
were the motor car dealers them
selves. "So when they saw to It that their
test cars were filled with Western
Oil, there was a great deal more back
of It than any mere feeling of loyalty
to home Industry. . One dealer Is re
ported as having said 'any Inferior
oil would have proved disastrous.'
Evidently most of them considered
western oil an the best bet."
The Jilting of the Jitney.
Washington (D. C.) Times.
The jitney is on the wane, accord
ing to statistics from street railway
corporations In cities where for a
time the jitney competition cut ser
iously into revenues. It develops that
the "jit" is losing the confidence of
its owners, as a financial proposition,
and the fancy of the public.
Costlier gas had something to do
with it; maintenance costs, spread
over a considerable period, had more.
But after all, the jitney couldn't be
a permanent factor, on a large scale,
in cities with good car facilities. A
jitney town, with all the car tracks
pulled up and the whole business
turned over to the buses, might some
day organize this sort of service so
as to make it paying and satisfactory.
But compet ition in intramural transit
is abhorrent to sense, and it has nev
er taken long to prove it In actual ex
perience. There isn't any sense trying to run
street cars and a flock of jitneys side
by side. Neither is were any sense
running two street car systems side
by side, as this town does. It's a
waste of money and patience.

Miss Lorene Seherziner, daughter
and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Scherzinger,
jf Oretown, Tillamook county, passed
away at the t-ioppner sanatorium on
.'ednesday evening about 10 o'clock.
The cauce of death was empyema.
The body was taken to Oretown
where the burial will take place oil
Saturday. The deceased was a niece
f Henry Scherzinger, a pioneer
