14 IIOME AND FARM MAGAZINE SECTION Poultrymen Ought to Advertise (By E B. Templer.) THE only way to sell what you have is to let people know that you have It to sell. You may be able to do this by word of mouth In the town where you live but if you wish to reach the buying poultry pub lic you must advertise. When you are just making the start with advertising work it may seem to you that it is money thrown away to pay for space in a paper. It is barely possible that this first small investment may not bring the returns that will cover the initial cosf but by persistent advertising you will achieve success. To build up a mail order business In the sale of stock and eggs, you simply must invest some of your money in letting people know that you have these things to sell. This money will be returned to you many fold during the succeeding months. Just consider the $5 or $10 that you are willing to place in advertising as money invested. You can look for extra good dividends from this form of investment and you will become as enthusiastic as some of the large firms that advertise so extensively in the newspapers and magazines. They know what brings the business, and are not paying several thousands of dollars for a single page for one issue Just for the fun of it. They reap a rich harvest, and have come to know that they must keep their wares con stantly before the public if they are to continue in business. Judicious Advertising. If you are running a small plant It Is not wise to expend large amount of money in order to let people know that you are in business, but a few small ads wisely and timely placed Will do as well. The classified columns are a bless ing to the small poultryman as they give him a chance to advertise at small cost. Just look over the classi fied department of any poultry jour nal and you will find here names of small poultrymen who have been us ing these columns for months and years. Now they must find them a source of profit or they would dis continue their advertising. This in itself should convince you as a be ginner in the work, that there is profit in careful advertising. Then something may be said about timely advertising if in the Fall you have a lot of choice cockerels that you want to dispose of, just run an ad in the classified department tell ing about them. You can put in the amount you wish for the birds or not as you see fit. If you want to try and sell them and are willing to take a fair price for them state it and you will be surprised to see how many of them you will sell. Don't advertise eegs for hatching In the Fall or early Winter, and cock erels well along in the breeding sea son. We have noted many times small poultrymen doing this and It is simply throwing money away. You do not see the large dealers doing this for they know the cost of their Bpace and wish to utilize every Issue for some practical purpose. Local Papers Iiest. As a beginner it is better to adver tise in your state paper. The older and larger breeders do advertise all over the country and get orders from almost every state in the Union, but you should endeavor to localize your work for a time at least. It may be that you have no state paper, if not, then advertise in the one nearest you that has a good circulation. A paper with 50,000 subscribers must have some pulling power, and remember that the chances are that your ad will be read by a large ma jority of them who do not peruse the columns of the classified department. I think that almost every reader reads them, and enjoys knowing what people have to offer. Your ad may just appeal to several and you will receive letters of Inquiry from them. The paper has then done all that it is expected to do and it is up to you to make the sale. Care In Writing the Advertisement, Have gome method when you write out your ad that you wish to send to the paper. If you do not know how to write an ad, then look over sev eral that you will find in the paper that you have. You may find one or two that appeals to you and seems to have some convincing power. While it is not well to copy someone else, you can pattern your copy after the one you like and thus inculcate its drawing power. Never try to be funny in an adver tisement or say something that will just draw the attention for the mo ment people don't buy from a jester. This advertising is serious businesi and much depends upon it. Let the people know what you have to offer, stating the facts in as few words as possible. If you have a circular, ask them to send for it, for this may be the way of breaking the ice and get ting in touch with the buyer. Follow I'p Methods. Never advertise and leave It all for the prospective customer, but when he writes you give him as careful a reply as possible, and then follow up the letter with others providing you do not hear from him in a reasonable length of time. Many times the prospective buyer Is a little slow or he may have writ ten several advertisers, and when he sees that you are interested in the matter he will give you the prefer ence. These follow up letters are very important for it is quite essential that you make as many sales from every inquiry as possible, this decreases the cost per inquiry and makes your ad vertising more effective. Many sales are lost simply through the neglect of the advertiser, he fails to look after the prospect once he has the inquiry. It will pay you to do some adver tising this Winter, so get busy with your pen and see how well you can write an ad. Look over your birds, select those that you want to sell and let the poultry public know about them. You may have fine stock and be compelled to eat them or sell them to market for a lack of fancy custom ers. Advertise and you will be able to sell at a profit and thus gradually work into a larger business. Advocate Colt Shows (Continued From Page 10.) justice to exhibitors and keep down all feelings of unfairness. It is best to get the services of some other than a local judge; one from the ag ricultural college when possible. In such cases the' judge may give an address at the evening meeting in which he explains the points of de sirable types and explains values of the different points in making up the complete score. Why Held in Spring. There are many advantages in holding the colt shows in the Spring. It requires better knowledge of feed ing and management to bring out a well-kept and growing colt in March than it does to produce a good foal in the Fall, when the mother's milk has supplied Its nourishment. This very fact will go far toward encouraging farmes and horsemen to give their colts the kind of care required dur ing the critical period of their first Winter, and colts thus cared for will grow into better horses. Early Spring or late Winter is also the time when farmers are on the lookout for good Bires for the rapidly approaching breeding season, and the show gives them a good line on the breeding qualities f the stallions whose gets are in the show. It also comes at the season of the year when preparations for the Spring work re quire frequent trips to town, and when the general farmer can spare some time In breaking his colts to step up briskly on the lead strap and otherwise perform well for show pur poses. Although the practice of annual Spring colt shows has not been tried out very extensively in some states, it has in others, and there is every reason to believe that it would suc ceed well In Oregon, and soon become a favored social and business affair as well as a ready means of Improv ing the quality of Oregon horses. The specialists of the Agricultural Col lege strongly favor the idea and stand ready to lend all assistance in their power In getting a show started In any part of the state. Lay ton Cooperage Co.
