Smead & Crawford Heppner, Oregon Korean J utile.. The Korean judge dispenses Justice In tbe open, and by etiquette only toe judge can ait Erery out else moat stand, excepting the prisoner and his friends, who are forced to remain In a bumble kneeling poaltlon with bowed beads. Until quite recently these trials were always very one sided and shock ingly unjust, states the Wide World Magazine. When a man was brought to a judge it was taken for granted be was guilty, and if he did not confess be was tortured aud made to do so. Witnesses, too. were openly bribed. In fact, giving evidence for or against an accused person meant a living to a portion of the community, and these witnesses naturally favored those who paid best Punishments varied. If the prisons were too full and the con demned could not pay a One they were often given a chance to escape or dis appeared by some means. Though these things are of the past Korean judges, like those of China, possess a poor Idea of the sense of justice. People's Cash Market! A solemn mun leaned forward as tha train approached the seaside resort "You see that boardln' boose over there. I can tell you a funny atory about that I was stayln' there thirty years Bince, and there was a 'usband and wife there, too very pleasant peo ple. One day after dinner 'e says to 'er, as any 'usband might say to any wife. 'Pass me tbem boots.' And she says to 'lm, as any wife might say to any 'usband. 'Get 'em yourself.' And 'e says, 'I'll never ask you for no more boots.' " "Well, is that all?" asked the victim a the ancient mariner paused for breath. "No. 'E went out at once and drown ed 'Imself in those very boots a new pair fresh on." , And the ancient mariner was ob viously gratified by the sensation which the climax of his funny story produced. Manchester Guardian. "might he aummt-d up In the difference t , between the wor cries of the two sports between "Well tried, old top,' nnd 'Slide, you bonehead. slide! "Col lier's. Marrying tht Whole Family. "I am marrying Tom, but I am not marrying bis whole family." said a bride the other duy. Yes, but you ( re. Wbeu you get married you do come into relationship with bis wbole fami ly, and you can't help yourself. 1 have known a number of cases In which some "sniffy" bride or bride groom tried to ignore certain mem bers of the "married into" family and later had to be closely connected with tbem. There was civility on both aides, but the early break could never be quite covered up, though the one who made it would have given any thing to hare it forgotten. When yon get married, unless there are actual criminals there whom duty would for bid you to recognize, accept cordially all of the family into which you are going. Don't be mean and airy about it Apart from considerations of right and propriety, there may be others which will make you sorry enough If you don't-Kate Upson Clark In Lea-lle'a. The Caspian Sea Puzzle Should the tldeiess Caspian ea be really drying up it la only continuing tbe process which baa been puzzling scientists for the past 'hundred years. The great dried up salt lakes to the east south and north of tbe Caspian no doubt once formed part of the great lake that remains, and Russia may yet be able to build a railway serosa ber Inland waterway. But, If Inland seas dry up, land elsewhere is sinking un der them. Where are tbe ancient ports that Agrlppa used? Under tbe waves of the Mediterranean. No place in the world seems to have Buffered so much from tbe sinking of tbe land as the bay of Naples, that paradise of the submarine archaeologist, who Is even now making fresh discoveries of buried suburbs and massive blocks of mason ry with tbe stone rings for mooring tbe Roman galleys. But be has to dive to get at them. London Citizen. Home Comforts at Sea, The circumstances In which one trav els on tbe ocean have vastly Improved during the past twenty years. Spring mattresses and brass bedsteads have replaced tbe old wooden bunks, im proved systems of heating and ventila tion have been introduced, sanitary ar rangements are greatly superior, both In quantity and In quality, while the furnishings of tbe public apartments and the attractions of the dining sa loon vie with those of the finest hotels on shore. Third class passengers have now separate cabins for four, sis or eight persons each In place of targe open 'tween deck spaces filled with tiers of Iron beds and accommodating hundreds. In place of benches and ta bles along the sides of their sleeping quarters separate dining saloons, smoke rooms and music rooms are pro vided. The Legs In Swimming. The correct stroke of the legs is ex actly like that of a frog's hind less. Watch one of these frogs and copy his style. You cannot do better. The legs are drawn up together slowly, not with a jerk, until they are gathered in close under tbe body. Then with a sudden, quick spring tbey are shot out behind, the ankles being turned so that the soles of the feet present as fiat a sur face as possible to the water and so offer more resistance from which to muke progress. As the kick is made the legs should be spread out in the shape of a letter V, but not allowed to sink far down uuder the surface of the water. If they kick downward nt an angle instead of out straight be hind much of their energy Is wasted In unnecessarily forcing the body out of the water Instead of forward. The Gazette-Times Costs More-is Worth More Curious Epitaphs. Old New England graveyards are not the only ones which contain curi ous epitaphs. The old time dweller of Maine who "died of a falling tree," as his headstone asserts, had a fellow in misfortune In faroff Austria, as Is shown by W. A. Balllle-Grohman's "The Tyrol and the Tyrolese." A wooden slab, painted with tbe rep resentation of a prostrate tree under which lies a man In spread eagle atti tude, bean testimony to the violent death of "Jobann Lemberger, aged flfty-two and three-quarters years. This upright and virtuous youth was squnshed by a falling tree." Tbe record of Michael Gerstner Is even .more succinct and convincing. Be "climbed up, fell down and was dead." Baseball Versus Cricket. We have known only one big league ball player to partake both of baseball and cricket as a pastime. He was the late Harry Vaughn, who played cricket In his early English days and later on became one of the star catchers of the Cincinnati Reds. Remember Rhlnes and Vaughn? We asked Vaughn one day wbat he regarded as the main difference be tween baseball and cricket His answer was the keenest we have ever heard to this query. JTufl. main difference h'd raffled, It Gets the Criminals. According to the Chinese method of criminal prosecution, a man Is respon sible for the .crime be may have com mitted personally, but if be chooses to escape justice by running away from the place wbere the deed was commit ted then tbe remaining members of bis immediate family are held and punish ed in lieu of the real culprit This may seem a strange way of attracting the real criminal back to the scene of his crime, but it appeals to the religious side of the man's superstitious nature. According to their religion, the man who forsakes his parents when In peril will find his soul sailing around through hades without chart or com pass for all eternity. In view of this, compliance with the law Is very prompt for John Chinaman does not care to take the desperate chance. Rain Catches In Bermuda. Notable among the landscape fea tures of Bermuda is the "rain catch." There is no other good water. All the water gained from wells Is brack ish. So the people either use their whitewashed roofs as a means to catch rain water or they build a big open "catch" on the hillside, with a covered cistern at Its foot Into which the rain thus collected runs and is stored. The soil is scraped away from a large sur face of the white coral rock that nn- derlics all the Island. This surface is cemented and whitewashed, and a low wall built on three sides with the reservoir or tank at. tbe bottom. Such Is Fame. It Is said that Mhearal Mis!, a wealthy Asiatic woman, discovered the art of making the perfume known as attar of roses and also invented the beautiful workmanship exhibited In the weaving of the celebrated cash mere shawls. Nothing whatever la known about ber death. Pretty Light. "I'll have to ask you to pay in ad vance, remarked the bote! keeper. "Isn't my luggage good enough se curity?" "I fear it Is a little too emotional" "Emotional?" "Yes; easily moved." London Mail. Raiult of Raihness. "Out of a job, are you?" asked the first rfrl. "Rnss rnrch von fllrtinz?"
