EY1DKXCE of what appears to be a
well organized campaign to de
lude farmers throughout the
country into buying an alleged cure for
bog cholera, under the impression that
this has been investigated and approved
by the' United States Government, has
reached the Department of Agriculture.
Articles praising this medicine, Bene
tol by name, aro being sent out wide
spread to newspapers. These articles
are so worded that it appears as if the
Department of Agriculture had re
ceived reports from the Stato of Minne
sota showing that the medicine had
proved most beneficial
As a matter of fact, the one report
Teceived by the Department was an un
official and unsolicited statement sent
presumably from the promoters them
selves. The department attaches no impor
tance whatsoever to this statement. It
has no reason to believe in the effi
ciency of any proprietary cure for hog
cholera and docs not recommend any.
Under certain conditions it urges farm
ers to protect their stock with anti-ing-ciolera
scrum, but that is all.
Ia connection with this attempt it
may be said that the medicine, which
is now pot forward as good for hogs,
was advertised soma time ago as a
means of killing tnbcrenlosis, typhoid
and cancer germs, according to an
article published in tha Journal of the
American Medical Association. At that
time it was asserted that the army was
interested is it. As a matter of faet,
the amy was no more interested then

Diseases of Hogs
ITE?rEVEB and wherever hog ehol
f en prevails all other epidemics to
which swine are subject aro apt to be
classified as hog cholera. Hera is an
incident that took plaeo in Will county,
111, which is a ease in point. The same
is related by tho Farmer's Review as
iTJnsirating the value of a county ad
riser: One day a hurry up call was received
from a farmer whoso hogs were dying
from supposed cholera. Of 300 head b it
SO were left, and tho external appear
ance of theso did not indicate cholera.
Ihe arlvjscr had a sick one killed and
immediately mado a postmortem exam
inaticm. The vital organs wcro found
to bo in a healthy condi.ion, but the in
testines were full of worms. Mr. Oran
nis advised a vermifuge for expelling I
the worms and the feeding of a mixture
of limestone screenings, rock phosphate
and wood ashes. This advice was fol
lowed,, and no further loss of pigs fol
lowed. This advice is invaluable to the
hog raiser. Worms and lack of min
eral matter aro two great causos that
contribute to a bad physical condition,
which makes pigs susceptible to any dis
ease that may come along, and if they
die in any number it is called cholera.
Experiment With Hog Feel
Tho Virginia experiment station has
carried on an extended trial of feeding
hogs on two diets, corn and digestive
tankage and corn and skim milk, with
the result that the latter shows slight
advantage over tho fiirraer, principally
because of the appetizing quality and
added moisture of the skim milk. On
a commercial basis very littlo differ
ence was found.
The increase in hogs is greater than
any other farm animal. Tho average
annual increase of horses, cattle and
sheep is from 30 to 80 per cent. In
hogs it is 6uO and over.
Never feed any animal so much that
it is satisfied without rustling around
for a part of its food.
