T is surprising how much a rope, if I rightly used, will do to solve some of the many difficulties ttiat arise ia the everyday life on the farm. Enough of these important uses are here pointed out to suggest oiner use that can be made of this common con venience in farm and shop work. The ends of the rope should be se cured to prevent them from becoming frayed and unraveled, and to afford a secure hold in use. Some stout twine or cord should be provided. In case the strands have become unlaid as in figure S, lay them up tightly. Make a loop in ne end of the cord and lay it along the rope with the loop extending away from the end of the rope, as indicated in figure 2. Start nearly a half inch from the end of the rope and proceed to wind the long end of the eord around the rope, working away from the end of the rope. The windings must be tight and close . together. This will fasten the ends of the eord, &fbr which cut off both ends about oae fourth inch from the windings. Some Handy Knots. This fastening iB suitable for hay and fee -halter ropes. It is also useful in naadini? split handles of farm and shop tools. Pine wire may be used in the same manner. tThe simple overhand knot, figure 4, is wed in making other kuots here ae ritual One of the most useful of everyday knots is the square knot To tie it, take an end of the rope in each hand. Place the end in the right hand underneath the end in the left hand. With the thumb and forefinger of the right tiaad turn the end of the rope that is on top around underneath the other Bad. While doing this, use the thumb and forefinger of the left hand to turn Ike ead projecting to the left over to yrard the right as indicated in figure 5. How bring the other end over and un der this end as shown in figure 0. The knot should be drawn tight by pulling on both ends at the same time. Finish by bringing the end up and sticking it down tnrougn tne nan mien as in. rig ors 8. Then draw it tight. This knit is useful for tying a rope around the horse's neck, tor attaching a rope to a clevis and for making a loop in which a person may sit while being lowered into a well. An imnrovised Dine wrench is shown in figure 9. It is suited to any size of pipe and to any degree or strain. The double end of a rone is wound sev eral times around a pipe as indicated. A Convenient Device! j A convenient device for hoisting bar rels, boxes and the like is Bhown in. figures 10 and 11. Place tne rope un derneath the middle of the vessel. Bring the ends up and tie an overhand knot as shown. Separate the knot and bring a half down each side of the object to h. 1 if t,l as shown in the figure. The ends of the rope may be tied with either a square or a bow-line knot. There are a number of hitches that may be made for pulling pipes from wells and other Bimilat purposes. The scaffold hitch, figure 12, is one of the best of these. To make the hitch, lay the long end of the rope along tne od ject with the end projecting in the direction opposite to that from which the pull will be made.
