A new law Is being initiated to prohibit anyone working over six days out of the seven. It is in charge of a committee of churches and la bor unions, and would seriously in terfere with employes on streetcars, rriiroads, hotels, restaurants, etc. The Eugene creamery has been sold to the farmers' creamery asso ciation, and they propose to double the capacity of the plant. Sisters of the Good Shepard of Portland will erect a ? 125,000 build ing on Albina Avenue. Klamath Falls will construct a sewer system in Mills addition. Steel for the first ten miles of the Grants Pass and Crescent City rail road has been bought. The state Grange condemned the proposed eight hour law as danger ous for the farmers and fruit grow ers of Oregon. Hids have been taken for con struction of the Hill railroad termin als at Flavel. The Derringer laundry at Bandon will be rebuilt and equipped with modern machinery. Port Orford wharf company has let a contract for a large dock. An important industry the past month in Oregon has been the man ufacture of graduation dresses. Commonwealth Day at Eugene considered a state industrial survey. The first piling was driven June 3 at Smith's Point near Astoria with public ceremonies, for construction of the big public dock system. President Sproule had one mes sage wherever he spoke in Oregon: Open the mills and the factories and get the people back to work. In Linn county a sample of con crete road was laid on Good Roads day. The entire floating debt of the state of Oregon, less sinking fund assets, is quoted by a census bulletin at JO. 04. Coos county has completed plans for a building at the Panama Expo sition. The State Grange rejected the pro posed initiative law for a fifteen hun dred dollar tax exemption. Eugene will spread oil and lay the dust on ten blocks of principal residence streets. 1 Knights of Pythias will erect 'a two story brick lodge hall at Scio, Lumber shipments to San Francis co from west coast harbors aggregat ed 23,850,000 for the first two weeks of May. Coos Hay sent 5,170,000 ft. The Willipa Construction Com pany was the lowest bidder for the Astoria tideflat filling contracts. The sawmills in Cottage Grove may shut down because they cannot be operated on small margins of prof it and meet the demands of the work Ingmen's compensation and liability laws. The State Grange adopted a resol ution limiting the power of cities to inspect food products such laws be ing in the interests of the large trust packing houses. Portland contractors have a large force executing the Tillamook Bay harbor improvements. Silverton Masonic lodge has adopt ed plans for the erection of a four story brick lodge and office building. The Workingmen's Compensation act, which strips employers who re fuse to come under its operations of all defences, goes into effect July 1. The Moose lodge of Bandon will construct a two story brick hall 100 by 100 feet. The steel work in the new court house at Klamath Falls will be made at Portland by the Northwest Steel Co. The Hudson Placer Mining and Dredging Co. of Portland and Van couver is installing a large plant at Gold Center, 7 miles from Sumpter. Lumber and creosote firms are planning to put down wood block on the Linnton road out of Portland. Willamette Valley industries will be a feature of the Oregon exhibit at the Panama Exposition. Eugene manufacturers are plann ing for a state-wide exhibit of made-ln-Oregon products. The past week the streets of Baker were lighted for the first time from the municipal plant. Hop growers in convention at In dependence, Saturday, made a pro test against that industry being put up at a popular vote to be wiped out of existance. Labor unions are picketing the Home Telephone Company because a man and woman have been em ployed who are not members of the union, and the company replies that ninety percent of its business comes from citizens who do not belong to unions. The latest great sea disaster in his tory was chronicled last week after the Empress of Ireland had gone down, taking with her over 934 souls. The huge steamship, which was the property of the Canadian Pacific rail road was rammed by the Danish col lier Storstad, in the St. Lawrence river, in a dense fog, just before dawn, on May 29th and sank in a very few minutes. The records show that in the last half century, 35 great marine disas ters have occurred, the greatest being the Titanic which went down off the coast of Newfoundland in 1912. Following is a list of disasters that have taken place since the year 1806: 1866, January 11 Steamer Lon don, on her way to Melbourne, foun dered in the bay of Biscay; 220 lives lost. 1867, October 29 Royal Mail steamers Rhone and Wye and about 50 other vessels driven ashore and wrecked at St. Thomas, West Indies, by a hurricane; about 1000 lives lost. 1783, January 22 British steamer Northlleet sunk in collision off Dun geuess; 300 lives lost. 1873, November 23 White Star liner Atlantic wrecked off Nova Sco tia; 547 lives lost. 1874, December 26 Emigrant vessel Cespatrick took lire and sank off Aukland; 476 lives lost. 1878, March 24 British training ship Eurydice, a frigate, foundered near Isle of Wight; 300 lives lost. 1878, September 3 British iron steamer Princess Alice sunk in col lision in Thames river; 700 lives lost 1878, December 18-French steam er Byzantine sunk in collision in the Dardanelles, with the British steam er Rinaldo; 210 lives lost. 1880, January 31 British train ing ship Atlanta left Bermuda with '290 nlen and was never heard from 1S87, January 23 Steamer Ka junda4, in collision with bark Ada Melore, off coast of Brazil; 300 lives. lost.
