GEORGE McDUFFEE, Sheriff. Dated at Heppner, Oregon, April 10, 1923. 50-2 Besutiry waste spots. Borders in the garden and yard are like frames that lend beauty to the picture. In many gardens and lawns there seems to be no space that can be spared for flowers, yet there are walks of cement, brick, or cinders, waste spaces along the alley, or around small buildings which If bor dered with some flowers would "hange the entire appearance of the place. China asters, old-fashioned pinks, English daisies, forget-me-nots, sweet alyssum, candy tuft and verbenas are good varieties for almost any soil or climate. In plnces where a taller bor der would bring out the picture, use sweet willlam, oriental, poppies or the stately hollyhock. Then find a high place for a blrdhouse, or plant some shrubs for nesting plnces. The true home picture Is lacking without the birds and flowers. Thrift Magazine. Some of the dresses made of per fectly plain silks and those that are heavily woven reconuneud themselves most heartily. They are made merely of masses of drapery. They scorn trimming in any respect. They are built to accentuate the lines of the form and to stop at that. Many of them have been seen at smart res taurants and upon the street, for they are products which have recommend ed themselves to the wear of women who are looking for new things and smart things at this season of the year. Many of these dresses made of dark blue or black or the darker shades of brown are embroidered most intri cately. In threads of silver and gold. This embroidery is applied only at the places where It will help to give weight to the silk and add design to the dress as a whole. It Is never added as an extraneous trimming, but It conforms to the lines of the dress and insists upon being a well-considered portion of the dress.
