Co. ii that the former wishes to bank rupt the Utter, which is already in the hands of a receiver, have it sold by the courts and bid it in, and at tauh it to the Southed) Pacific sys tem, thus tightening the coils of, iiie octopus about the people of the Pacific coast. "V Jix-rresmeut Harrison receives a larger sum for his articles on "This Country of Ours," which he is writing for The Ladies Home Journal, than has been paid to any public man in America for mag. une work of g similar nature. His first article, in the Christmas nun ber of the Journal, sold oer 100,- 000 extra copies of the magazine, of which 72o,9C0 copies were print ed as a first edition. J.he A. r. A. sustained a crush ing defeat in the elections in Geor gia as well as elsewhere. Gov. At kinson signified his disgust of the spirit of religious intolerance "vinied by that organization by ap p 'inting James 0'Neil,-one of the prominent young Catholics of At lanta, as city solicitor, an office worth $10,000 a year, in the face of . the request of the A. P. A. that he appoint no Catholics to office. Ex The Express begins the Ne Year with a firm purpose to give to the public a better paper than ever before. Sttiiutur Mituliell has introduced Oills increasing Portland's public building appropriation to $1,100,- 0y0, and Congressman Hermann uAs for $100,000 for a government buildingatSdem. No wonder times are hard and taxes high, when such enormous sums are squandered in this way! $100,000- would put up a commodious building with every modern convenience, and answer ing every want in Portland, and $10,000 would be sufficient for Sa lem, where one is needed less than in Roseburg, having fewer govern ment offices.'; Cut down salaries, reduce expenditures! should be the slogan of every honest representa tive of the people. Roseburg Review. The police officers ot Corvallis disgraced themselves and the city by their drunken rowdyism during the appearance in that city recently of a theatrical troupe. The Times gave a full account of the occur rence, with no attempt at conceal ment. The council then fired the guilty officers. Now the paper U ueing censured lor giving to the public the tacts, and the council is asked to reprimand the editor. In the first place, the reprimanding of editors is not. pue of the duties the law imposes on the council. In tbif-Tfaao flt0 nana A'.A lta and deserves praise rather than censure. For myself, I was "chopped down" Ofloa, aad oaoa only, writes Charles O. D. Roberts, la 8t Nloholas. It hap pened In this way. la the midwinter of 187S, I had oooaaloi tovlilt theohiet omp of the Little Madawaska. Com ing from the otty, and to a oatnp where I wu stranger to all the men, I wu not unnaturally regarded u a pro nonnoed speolmen ot the greenhorn. I took no paint to tell any one what the boas already well knew, that is, that I had been a frequenter of theoampe from my boyhood. Many and many a neat trap wu laid for my apparently "tender" feet, but I avoided them all as if by sodden t Aa for olimbing a tree, I alwaya laughed at the idea when it was proposed to me: I always suggested that it might spoil my clothes. Before long the men, by putting little things together, eame to the conoluaion that I was an old auger; and, rather sheepish ly, they gave over their attempts to en trap me. Then I graoioualy wived my band, as It were, and was frankly re ceived as a veteran, oleand from every sutpioion of being green. At last the day oame when I eW wish to climb a tree. The oamp wu on a nigh plateau, and not far off towered a magnificent pine tree, growing out of the aummlt of a knoll in tuoh a way u to oommand all the surrounding coun try. Its branches wen phenomenally think; its girth of trunk wu magnifi cent And this tree I rewired one day to olimb, in order to get a dear idea ot the lay of the land. Of course I strolled off surreptitiously, and, u I thought, unwatched. But there I wu muoh mistaken. No aoonerwul two- thirds ot the way up the tree than, with ahouta of laughter, the lumbermen rushed out of the surrounding cover and proceeded to ohop me down. The ohance wu too good for them to lose. I concealed my annoyance, and made no attempt to descend. On the contra ry I thanked them for the little atten tion, and climbed a few feet further up, to secure a position which I saw would be a safe one tor me when the tree should fall. As I did so, I perceived, with a gup and a tremor, that I wu not alone is the tree. There, not ten feet above me, stretched at full length along a large branch, wu a huge panther, glaring with rage and terror. From the men below his form wu quite concealed. Glancing restless- lesaly from me to my pursuers, the brute seemed uncertain just what to do. As I carefully refrained from olimbing any further up, and tried to assume an air of not having observed him, he ap parently concluded that I wu not hit wont enemy. In fact, I dan say he un derstood what wu going on and real iied that be and I wen lellow-auflerors. I laughed toftly to myself as 1 thought how my tormentors would be taken aback when that panther should come down among them. I decided that, con sidering their numbers, then would be at leut no mon danger for them than that to whioh they wen exposing me in their reckless fooling. And, already in fluenced by that touch of nature which makes us to wondrous kind, I began to hope that the panther would succeed In making hit escape. The trunk ot the pine wu to thick that I might almost have reached the ground before the choppers could cut it through. Atlutitgaveamightvthud- der and tagged to one aide. I balanced myself nimbl7 on the upperside, steady ing myself by a convenient branch. The great mut of foliage, presenting a wide surxaoe to the air, made the fall a com paratively slow one; but the tremendous weep of the draught upward, u the tree-top described its gigantic arc, gave me a sickening sensation. Then came the final dull and thunderous crash, and in aa instant, I found myself standing in my place, jarred but unhurt, with the snow threshed up all about me. The next instant there wu another roar, or rather a tort of screaming yell. overwhelming tho riotous laughter of the woodsmen; and out of the confusion of pine-boughs shot the tawny form of the panther in a whirlwind of fury. One ot the choppers wu in bis path, and was bowled over like a clutu.iy nine-pin. The next bound brought the beast on to the backs of a yoke of oxen, and hit cruel olaws severely scratched the oxen't necks. As the poor animals bellowed and fell on thoir knees, the panther paused, witn aomo idea, apparently, of lighting the wbolo assembled party. But u the men, recovered from their first amuement, rushed with their axes to the rescue of tho oxon, tho panther uw that the odda wore all against him. Be turned half round and irree tod hisone- mies with one torriiic and strident snarl, then bounded off into the forest at a pace which made it idle to pursuo him The owner of tho oxen Initial au axt after him, but the missile flew wide of Its mark.
