Ofloa, aad oaoa only, writes Charles O.
D. Roberts, la 8t Nloholas. It hap
pened In this way. la the midwinter of
187S, I had oooaaloi tovlilt theohiet
omp of the Little Madawaska. Com
ing from the otty, and to a oatnp where
I wu stranger to all the men, I wu
not unnaturally regarded u a pro
nonnoed speolmen ot the greenhorn. I
took no paint to tell any one what the
boas already well knew, that is, that I
had been a frequenter of theoampe from
my boyhood. Many and many a neat
trap wu laid for my apparently
"tender" feet, but I avoided them all as
if by sodden t Aa for olimbing a tree,
I alwaya laughed at the idea when it
was proposed to me: I always suggested
that it might spoil my clothes. Before
long the men, by putting little things
together, eame to the conoluaion that I
was an old auger; and, rather sheepish
ly, they gave over their attempts to en
trap me. Then I graoioualy wived my
band, as It were, and was frankly re
ceived as a veteran, oleand from every
sutpioion of being green.
At last the day oame when I eW wish
to climb a tree. The oamp wu on a
nigh plateau, and not far off towered a
magnificent pine tree, growing out of
the aummlt of a knoll in tuoh a way u
to oommand all the surrounding coun
try. Its branches wen phenomenally
think; its girth of trunk wu magnifi
cent And this tree I rewired one day
to olimb, in order to get a dear idea
ot the lay of the land. Of course I
strolled off surreptitiously, and, u I
thought, unwatched. But there I wu
muoh mistaken. No aoonerwul two-
thirds ot the way up the tree than, with
ahouta of laughter, the lumbermen
rushed out of the surrounding cover and
proceeded to ohop me down. The ohance
wu too good for them to lose.
I concealed my annoyance, and made
no attempt to descend. On the contra
ry I thanked them for the little atten
tion, and climbed a few feet further up,
to secure a position which I saw would
be a safe one tor me when the tree should
fall. As I did so, I perceived, with a
gup and a tremor, that I wu not alone
is the tree.
There, not ten feet above me, stretched
at full length along a large branch, wu
a huge panther, glaring with rage and
terror. From the men below his form
wu quite concealed. Glancing restless-
lesaly from me to my pursuers, the
brute seemed uncertain just what to do.
As I carefully refrained from olimbing
any further up, and tried to assume an
air of not having observed him, he ap
parently concluded that I wu not hit
wont enemy. In fact, I dan say he un
derstood what wu going on and real
iied that be and I wen lellow-auflerors.
I laughed toftly to myself as 1 thought
how my tormentors would be taken
aback when that panther should come
down among them. I decided that, con
sidering their numbers, then would be
at leut no mon danger for them than
that to whioh they wen exposing me in
their reckless fooling. And, already in
fluenced by that touch of nature which
makes us to wondrous kind, I began to
hope that the panther would succeed In
making hit escape.
The trunk ot the pine wu to thick
that I might almost have reached the
ground before the choppers could cut it
through. Atlutitgaveamightvthud-
der and tagged to one aide. I balanced
myself nimbl7 on the upperside, steady
ing myself by a convenient branch. The
great mut of foliage, presenting a wide
surxaoe to the air, made the fall a com
paratively slow one; but the tremendous
weep of the draught upward, u the
tree-top described its gigantic arc, gave
me a sickening sensation. Then came
the final dull and thunderous crash, and
in aa instant, I found myself standing
in my place, jarred but unhurt, with the
snow threshed up all about me.
The next instant there wu another
roar, or rather a tort of screaming yell.
overwhelming tho riotous laughter of the
woodsmen; and out of the confusion of
pine-boughs shot the tawny form of the
panther in a whirlwind of fury. One ot
the choppers wu in bis path, and was
bowled over like a clutu.iy nine-pin.
The next bound brought the beast on to
the backs of a yoke of oxen, and hit
cruel olaws severely scratched the oxen't
necks. As the poor animals bellowed
and fell on thoir knees, the panther
paused, witn aomo idea, apparently, of
lighting the wbolo assembled party.
But u the men, recovered from their
first amuement, rushed with their axes
to the rescue of tho oxon, tho panther
uw that the odda wore all against him.
