The paper mill has been getting its lime from California for the last few weeks on account of the high water in Portland. The citizens have decided to cele brate the grand fourth of July this year and great preparations are being made to that end. In the afternoon an opportunity will be given to witness a grand athletic tournament open to all comers. Prizes will be given to the winner In each contest. The contests will consist of races etc. The following prizes are already arranged and open for compe tition: Hose raoe, wet test, first prize, (40.00 Hose race, wet test, second prize 15.00 Bicycle race, one prize 6.00 Baseball game, one prize, ,10.00 Footrace, 150 yards, one prize, 2.50 Foot raoe, 200 yards, one prize, 2.50 Ladies raoe, 60 yards, contestants not less than 18 yrs of age 2.50 Fat men's race, 50 yds, one prize, 1.50 Sack race, 25 yards, one prize, 1.50 Potato race, one prize 1.50 The races will be on Main Street, and will be under the supervision of a committee who will guarantee a fair and Impartial test in all cases. Particulars given later. Mr. J. B. Slater died at his residence in this city Inst Sunday and was buried flie following day in the Masonic oemotery. He was 75 years old and leaves a wife and eight chil dren to mourn his departure. Last Monday afternoon Miss Olle Armstrong, ' sister of Mrs. F. M. Miller, with whom she is making her home, silppfid and fell while on the walk in the back yard and broke her left leg just, above the ankle. Dr. Booth assisted by Dr. Barker reduced the fracture and at this writing she Is doing nicely. Mr. J. R. Stockman of Albany was in the olty today looking about the warehouse that he has recently pur chased for the Red Crown flouring mills. They will take charge of the warehouse July Jst and have secured Mr. J. M. Settle to run it for them this year.
