Beard and family started to the mountains! yesterday. Mr. Chas. Miller is staying In a drug store in Albany a few days this week. The engine company was out on the street for a drill last Saturday evening. Dr. E. Barker of Walla Walla is paying a visit to his mother in Leba non. Miss Kate Hackleman of Albany is in the city this week visiting friends and relatives. Mr. Foliicc has so far recovered from his attack of fever as to be able to be out on the street. A lot of the very best binding twine for sale at 14 cents per lb. Call on J. W. Bell at Spicer- Miss Frankie Constable is visiting in town this week. She is a guest at the house of Mr. Mayers. Mr. M. A. Miller has sold his drug store In Albany to L. W. Guise & Son, recently from Kansas. Mrs. W. A. MUler of Pendleton is in the city visiting the family of her father-in-law, Hon. It. C. Miller. Rev. C. H. Wallace of Eugeue spent last Sunday in Lebanon and preached in the Cumberland Pesbyterian church both morning and evening. On Tuesday the Express office was ornamented and filled with perfume by two nice bouquets presented by two nice little girls, Edna and Sylvia Bry ant. Mr. W. B. Dottaea and wife started for the mountains on last Wednesday, where they intend spending two or three weeks fishing and gathering blackberries. The Zell place, consisting cf 200 acres, four miles northeast of Lebanon, has been sold to Mr. E. J. Mills, through the agency of A. R.-Cyrus & Co. Consideration, $S00. Mr. Hope's commission as postmas ter arrived on Tuesday night, and the office will soon be turned oyer to him. He will remove the office into his building, two doors north of its pres ent location, next week. The fourth quarterly conference of the M. E. church for the Lebanon tharge will be held Friday, August 3d, instead of Saturday, August 4th, as previously announced. Rev. S. P. Wil son will rreaeh at 2:30 P. M. Mr. Kinman solved the greyhound and muie-eared-rabbit problem which appeared in the Expriss last week. Anyone having tried to work it and failed can learn of him how it is done. He also understands the one of the brindle cow and red-headed girl. Mr. Gross of Waterloo sent the Ex fress office another jug of soda water this week. It was very enjoyable, that is, our neighbors down stairs seemed to enjoy getting away with almost the entire contents of the jug before it reached the thirsty printers. Mr. Miller is an energetic young man, and we wel eoroe him back to our town. He says I Lebanon is good enough for him. Dr. Courtney will continue to practice his profession in this place. Mrs. Kirkpatrick, wife of Rev. J. R. Kirkpatrick, three daughters and little son arrived here from Texas on Thursday. They are closely related to the publisher of this paper, and it is needless to say that we were glad to see them. They were wel comed to their new home by a house ful of friends and all sat down to a good dinner. The Express will be a better paper from now on. Two sons of Geo. L. Hibbard, one of the oldest pioneer merchants of Port land, were found in the river just above that city Monday morning. The boys were missing since the day before, when they left home to bathe in the river. The boys were evidently alone at the time of the drowning and no particulars are known. They Mere aged 7 and 14 years respectively. The parents are distracted with grief. - A crentleman in this place says that when he marries he wants a lady whose feet are so small that she can easily keep people from tramping upon her toes. He must indeed be better informed than most felloM-s. We have not yet been brave, enough to look f'r a, lady's toes, and if called upon to tes tify in such eases by the "laws made and provided," would insist upon be ing dismissed as an absolutely incom petent M-itness. Geo. Satlerfield and N. A. Ward live in rcomsof the same house seven miles from Eugene. Last Friday night Mr. Hatlerfield, not feeling well, got up and went into the kitchen of Mr. Ward to et some medicine. Mrs. Ward hear ing the noise called her husband, who got his gun and opened the kitchen door and asked "Who's there?" but receiving no reply fired a load of buck shot, which struck Mr. Satlerfield in the thigh, inflicting a dangerous wound. A doctor Mas called, who fixed up the bones and dressed the . wotnnis and hopes to be able to save the lirai, hut is by no means certain that it GMi be done. A XUch Gold Strike on the Santiam. A dispatch to the Oregoniait from Salem says: President Wright of the Capital mine, on the Santiam, Monday received word that a rich strike had been made by two miuers sent up some day since to open up the tunnel and prospect about their claims. The work men started in on the south wall of the lead, about 120 feet from the main tuu ncl, when they struck a vein that they describe as containing a large amount of free gold. The vein is three feet thick. One of the men came down to Mehama and from there wrote to Mr. Wright to come up immediately. He left to-night for the mines, and as soon as he looks over the ground and examines the conditions of the strike he will return and recommend meas ures to be taken for the development of the mine. The man who came down to Mehama was unable to keep the hews of the discovery to himself, and consequently the excitement is reported at lever heat in that commu nity. A number have packed horses and shouldered picks and started up the little north fork of the Santiam, where the Capital is located. The mine has long been known to be rich, and but for several catastrophes, incur ring great loss of property, there, fa ho doubt that ere this it M ould have-bei n fully worked. The south wall of the lead had never been fully prospected before, though one er two diitctoK'tif the company M ere of a firm opinion that there M-as where M-ork should be inaugurated. - Found Head. Last Friday E. S. Bramhall, pief master at Aim, Clackamas county, had occasion to visit the cabin of a rancher near that place. No response beirg made to his knock he pushed open the dcor and M-as greeted by a foul odor and a shocking sight. Sitting in a chair, partially propped against the M-all of the cabin, M-as the body of the former OM-ner, John Gessler. He had tiie appearance of having been dead from four to six weeka. Everything appeared in . order about the cabin, with no indications of foul play. The man M-as about 40 years old and lived alone on his homestead. A 30,000 College at Tnngent. A committee appointed by the South ern Methodist church for the purpose of locating a college in Oregon, at a re cent meeting decided to locate it at Tangent. The building is to cost f 30 -000, and will be under the management of the Southern Methodist church. The action of the committe Mill be subject to the action of the annual con ference, which meets in October, but it is probable that the location of the school will remain ai Tangent. A fund of $12,000 is already on hand for this purpose. Herald. A very sad drowning accident oc curred in Thomas cieeR, three mil below Scio, last Sunday afternoon. Henry Ends, stepson of Mr. Fountain, was in bathing alone, two little boys being ou the bank of the creek M atch ing: him, when he suddenly got into the M-ater over his head, and, Deing unable to swim, strangled and disap peared. The boys notified the nearest neighbors, and the body of the unfor tunate young man M-as recovered after some search. He was about 19 yea: s of age. The OU Can Exploded. The following item about a lady well known in Lebanon, M-here she re cently resided and has many friends, is from the Home Press., Ceuterville, Umatilla county: "Wednesday Mrs. Donaca M as in the act of starting a fire in her kitchen stove with kerosene, M-hen the vessel containing the oil ex ploded. Fortunately for the lady the can did not contain much, otherM-ise she would have been seriously burned; as it was she had a close call. People cannot be too careful in the use of ker sene." A Town Destroyed by Fire. Last Sunday afternoon fire destroyed the coal mining town of Roslyn, twenty-eight miles from Ellensburg, W. T-, rendering the entire population of 1-300 homeless. The M-ind was blowing at the time, and the town beiug M-ithout fire apparatus nothing was saved. Pro visions and clothing Mere sent from Eilensbursr. About 2o0 houses Mere burned. Nothing M as left but the em T company s office and depot. Loss, I $;axt,Uuy. Anniversary Party. Last Monday evening quite a num ber of the neighbors and friends of A. R. Cyrus and wife gave them a pleas ant surprise party, it being the' occa sion of the twentieth anniversary of their wedding. The evenii g M as passed in a pleasant manner, the en joyment being enhanced by the nu merous good things brought in by the friends, who kindly wished them many returns of the day. Total Ecllpue of the Moon. According to programme the earth got betM'een the sun and the moon Sunday night so effectually as to pro duce a total eclipse of the moon. It M-as a moet interesting and M-onderful l henomenon to many, who had never before seen a total eclipse of the moon, and the evening Mas most favorable for the observation. It commenced at 7:43 and did not entirely leave the moon until 12:23. ' ' To the Mountains or Blackberry Patch. James P perry of Heppner is visiting his brother, Rev. Carpus Spcrry. Mr. Larkln and wife on Friday started for the Kitson hot springs. Mrs. R. M. Bradley, of Bellevue, I. T., is visiting her brother, Ely Roby. Mrs. Wm. Morgan of East Portland is visiting family relatives at this place. Mrs. George Cooley is at present vis iting her married daughter at Hepp ner. Porter Elmore and M ife and family will permanently reside at Browns ville. Miss Carrie Hausman Inst week de parted for East Portland to visit her uncle. Joseph White, roadniaster of the O. Ry., passed Sunday with Brownsville friends. Married, at Albany. July 15, Mr. R. E. Putnam and Miss Pauline Wetterer, both of Brownsville. Prof. B. A. Childers and M-ife are at tending the Teachers' National Con vention at San Francisco. Fresh arrival of bunchgrass ponies; more fun for the boys, breaking them sometimes the boys, sometimes the ponies. M. B. Crane, formerly of this place but for some time past a resident of Pendleton, hrs removed his business to Tacoma, W. T. Ray, the son of-R. X. Thomson, while chasing a com-, fell, striking his knee on an empty oil can, from which lie received a severe cut. A. Butts and M ife, M ho for the past three months have been visiting friends in the Atlantic States, on Tues day last returned home. Dr. IL 11. Curl and family and Mi Sharp last week left for the Betkunp hot springs on the McKensle. They will remain aM-ay a month. Mrs. and Miss Hida, of San Fran cisco, who for some time past have been the guests of Mrs. R. X. Thomp son, during the past week returned to California. On Friday Mrs. Carpus Spcrry left for Portland, having received a tele gram informing her cr the severe ill ness of her little grandchild, the in fant boy of Mrs. Wm. Skiff. The mail matter on Tuesday last was very limited, consisting of periodicals. This M as occasioned by the derailment of the postal car en the O. Ry., which by some mistake plunged into the Wil lamette river at Fulquartz. The Cumberland Presbyterian church, South Brownsville, presents a very bright and attractive appearance since receving a thorough remodeling and painting and the addition of a bel fry, the new bell for M-hich is daily ex pected to arrive. On Tuesday night considerable at tention was paid to the suspicious movements of four young men, evi dently "tourists" M-ho M-ere traveling on a "tie pass," and, differing from most "rolling Btoncs," M ere M illing to "gather moss" as they rolled through toM'n by the light of the moon. For tunately for the M-elfare of our citizens, ToM'n Marshal J.Wilson followed them so closely that after being detected skulking through our back alleys they at about 2 A. M. took a speedy depart ure. There has been considerable life in mining matters during the week. W. S. Masters on Monday started M ith a load of supplies, tools, etc., for the Pio neer claim, situated on the Caiapoia, assays from which show from crdr pings $39 per ton in gold M-ith traces of silver. It is the intention of the oM-ners of this claim to push work during the season and if possible thoroughly de velop the lead. The incorporators of the "Gold Dust" Mill also during the week forM-ard tools and provisions to their claim and proceed M ith the M-ork already commenced and being oarriod on by those' who for the past two weeks have been at the claim. In a. short time M-ork m-IU be resumed on the Lucky Boy tunnel, which is now ad vanced some 180 feet, passing through a number of spurs," the quartz from which shows remarkable richness in gold and silver. The recent discover ies of this year have confirmed the im pressions of past years, that the Cala pooia and Blue river districts are rich in mineral wealth, and only require energy, capital and perseverance to prove that mo have within almost a home circle mines that will compare most favorably with those of more dis tant localities, farther removed from market and more difficult of access. The weather lias been extremely hot for the past, tcii days. Apples on the trees are roasted. Our citizens M-ere all out last night observing the eclipse of the moon. It was a fine scene. Mrs. Sarah McCaw has been very sick for the past ten days, but is now able to sit up a little. Mr. Herman Robe returned from the mines last Wednesday. He left his brother W. W. Robe very sick. Mr. Henry Harkness and M ife of Lebanon were in town a couple of days last M-eek. Mr. Harkness M as setting up some new binders. Our band boys have ordered a new cornet for their leader. The horn is made in Elkhart,' Indiana, and is said to be the finest make in the United States. Mr. H. McMullcn and family moved to Tangent last Tuesday, M-here they have bought town property. We are sorry to lose ruch good citizens from our toM-n. We need good school facil ities here in order to hold the better class of people. Grade Robinct died last night at the residence of D. F. Robinet. her uncle. of rheumatism of the hcai t. She had uot been sick very long. She M as the daughter of Wm. Robinet; was 4 years of age and a very sweet child. One cf Mr. Robinet's little boys, a brother of the deceased, received a very painful kick from a horse last M-eek. Loxa Hungry. Married. The following is from the Mexia (Texas) Ledger of July 6th: Mr. C. W. Cobb, editor and proprietor of the New Era, and Miss Nettie Kirkpatrick, daughter of Rev. J. R. Kirkpatrick, of Groesbeeck, were married last night at the Presbyterian church in Groesbeeck. Soon after the ceremony the happy souple took the south-bound train for Houston and Galveston to spend a few days. The groom is M-ell known as one of Grocsbeeck's most popular young men and one who gives promise of a bright future.
