Democracy is purest fraternity.
We Americans are fraternal bro­
thers. having «juaJ say in affairs of

To be conscripted by a despot
would be humiliating; but there is
no despot in the** United States.
In past wars in which Americans
engaged an <Miiun> attached to con­
scription. and you know why. First
came calls for volunteers
Then,
when all had volunteered who would,
slackers were conscripted, "drafted”
was the word used in the civil war.
but the meaning is the same. There
waa no rlorv for slackers who were
drafted into war
Now we are to have conscription
for this war, yet no odium attaches
tn it. and. again, you know why.
We are,
remember, fraternal
brothers, having wjual say in gov­
ernmental affairs
We are not to he conscripted by
a despot We are to be conscripted
by ourselves. It is our own doing.
We are a sovereign people, and it is
our sovereign will that we employ
conscription for this war.
Furthermore, we are not to em-
ploy conscription as a last renort.
but as a first resort We. the free­
men, do not propose to use conscrip­
tion to drag unwilling slackers into
the war.
That thought makes, and ought
to make, a big difference in the
American mind.
We are Io have selective eon-
scriplion, And yet again you know
why.
Some of
of us might nurse. Some of u*
must work in munition plants Some
of us must produce food.
Selective conscription will put
fighters in the trenches, nurses in
the hospitals, skilled workers in the
factories ami farmers on the soil.
That's efficiency. Thus we will win
the war.
Those <<f us who want to "do our
bit" will not object to conscription.
And we will have the satisfying
knowledge that, whether willing or
otherwise, the slackers, too, art­
doing their share -Contributed.
