PROFESSIONAL-> DENTIST GATHERED FROM ALL PARTS OF THE PHYSICIAN AND SURGEON SCIO. OREGON Cradaate Eclectic Modlcal Colle»» Cincinnati, J^G. PRILL M. D. 1903 BLOW OPEN BANK. dang of Robbers Make Successful Raid on the Sheridan Bank. Sheridan, Or., Oct. 27.—With nitro glycerine and borrowed tools, three safe-crackers forced the vault of the private bank of Scroggin A Wortman, here early Munday morning, took $5,- 000 in gold and silver and escaped without leaving a clew, notwithstand ing that J. Z. Eakin, the mayor of Sheridan, took three rifle shots at them from close range. So similar were their methods to those of the l>andit gang who attempt ed to rob the Newberg bank on October 1, that no doubt exists in the minds of Sheriff Sitton, of Yamhill county, and his deputies that the roblier bands are identical. The robbers entered the bank by pry ing open the front door. A brick vault with walla three feet thick were cut through with tools borrowed from the railroad tool house at Ballston, four miles away The small safe inside the large vault «as then drilled, nitro glycerine was poured in and an explo sion occurred, which wrecked the safe, the vault anil the interior of the bank, and the plate glass windows in front. Pieces of the safe were thrown through the steel door of the vault and into the street. The sound of the explosion alarmed Mayor1# Eakin and other citizens. With bullets singing over their heads, the robliers climbed into a buggy with the valuable contents of the bank as freight, and drove to the southward. Within half an hour all Sheridan knew that the only bank in town had been robbed The identity of the safe robliers is as much a mystery as their present loca tion, and it was the belief of Sheriff Sitton that the gang who terrorized Newberg returned immediately to Port land. If this holds true in the Sheri dan robbery, the move to the south- ward'was merely a blind. HAPPENINGS HERE IN OREGON PRUNES IN POOR DEMAND. SURVEY IN HARNBY VALLEY. Association Holds Price Up to Two and Whistler's Party Investigating Proposed Reservoir Sites. One-Half Dents. Salem — Dullness and uncertainty prevail in the prune market. The greater portion of the crop in this vi cinity has lieen harvested and by the middle of the week all the growers in tiie hill country south of Salem will have their prunes cured. The yield lias lieen large and the quality is first class. The prunes are rich in sugar, ot excellent flavor and of unusually go«xl texture. The dried fruit this year shows no “bloaters” such as are found some years. The crop haying turned out lietter than was expected, the growers have nothing now to trouble them but selling the crop. It is estimated that the Oregon crop, including that of Clark county, Wash ington, will amount to about 1,900 carloads. Of this quantity probably a little more than one-third has been sold at prices ranging from 4 to 4X cents for the 40 to 50 to the pound size. The sales at the; higher price were made early and recently 4 cents for 40s, or 2X*cent basiB, has prevailed. Low er prices have lx-en made by a number of dealers. A little less than one- third of the entire crop will pass through the hands of the Willmette Valley l’rune association, the Umpqua Valley association and the ('lurk Coun ty association and individual dealers who are at present holding for a 2X- eent basis price. It is estimated that more than a third of the crop is un sold and in the hands of the growers who are not identified with associations and who are looking for a chance to sell at the best price they can get. Harney—The field party of the geo logical survey in Oregon, under the di rection of John T. Whistler, district engineer, consisting of M. I). William» and Frederick C. Huber, is continuing the development of topography of irri gable lands in Harney valley. Some thing over one-half of the valley north of Malheur Ijike has now been covered. It is estimated that the work can be completed by December 1. Another field party, consisting of Herlx'rt D. Newell and Esmund I. Davis, is investigating an additional reservoir site on lower Bully creek and one on upper Willow creek. The Wil low creek reservoir site is lieing studied with a view of ascertaining the possi bility of covering certain lands on tha west side of upper Willow creekjvalley. The work on the Umatilla project has l>een in charge of Thomas B. White and a party of four assistants. After a full examination of the reservoir site, the canal line to Upiatilla river will be taken up, topographic work lieing carriedo n at the same time. A representative body of citizens of Union county, has presented to tha chief engineer of the United States geo logical survey a statement of the ex isting conditions in that county, accom panied with a request that investiga tions and surveys lie made of certain reservoir sites and of the possibilities of developing an underground water supply by means of artesian wells. The petition asserts that Union coun ty contains more than 100,000 acres of fertile irrigable land, and that the pres ent water supply druing the two months of low water suffices to irriagto only aliout 1,000 acres.
