The sudden desire for entrenchment, coming as it does from many sys tems, would seem to indicate a pre concerted plan. It was announced m a stop toward entrenchment and In a measure to recoup losses from the flood, the Erie Railroad officials have decided to out down their force. Many men are to be dlscharg ed from the repair shops and from the maintenance of way crops. The Southern Pacific railroad is to follow the example of the New York Cen tral and curtail expences by laying dff'employes. The Harriman line is preparing, according to an author, itative report just received in Chi cago, to reduce its force by 1200 men immediately. The chief cuts wil be made in the shops, but there wil be economizing all along the line A Chicago man who claims to be the prophet Elijah this week ac couianiod by several train loads ni followers went from Chicago to N. Y. to secure tho conversation of that city. The insane asylum of the county are full of men who have im agined themselves Elijah and other Bible characters, and it is strange that this man has escaped, but he has net only escaped, he has besides accumulated several million dollars ior his immense project of evange lizing the world. That would ba a splendid thing, but depend upon it no such character as Dowie, witli a head full of wheels, is going to be used for the end desired. In fact he will probably do more harm than good, bringing ridiiule instead of commendation. SALE BOG acres 8 miles S. Tne work of raising the vessels of the Spanish fleet sunk in the harbor of Manila on May 1, 1898, is now end ed- The famous flag ship, the Reina Christina, is again a float, and will be used as a collier. The other ves sels will be variously utilized. But the singular fact revealed, according to the Manila Sunday Snn, is that "the Spanish ships of war do not bear the mark of an American shell near or below the water line. The Spanish burned and sank their own Vessels, and many of them went to death with their ships in preference to bearing the disgrace of the defeat Not only this but the Snn affirms that, in the opinion of Captain Garry '‘the Spaniards Bet tire to their own vessels and afterwards scuttled them The American shells did not sink them" Captain Garry is the mana, ger of the American company which Is raising the vessols.
