Island Red hen which has a habit
of laying unusually large eggs. About
a fourth of the time, Mr. Francis says,
this hen lays doubleyolked eggs and
very frequently an egg with a double
shell.
Mr. Franeis has a flock of 32 Rhode
Island Red hens from which he has
netted II each since January 1. This
flock Is the result of six years of
careful culling, and Mr. Francis says
that in culling Ilea the secret of sne

The man who proposes to wait until we are able to pay as we go for sub
Btantial road building, is never ready lo begin action.
A man who made $1,U00 (or any part thereof) during 1919, whether a
farming, merchandising, contracting or labor, and has it in ready cash a year
later, is a ioor business man, becaus the successful man would immedi
ately Invest it either in his business or interest bearing security where it
would yield him 6, 7 or even 10 or 15 per cent. Therefore he can better af
ford to pay 5 per cent interest on hi share of road bonds than to pay cash.
Or, he is operating on oorrowed money for the uses of which he is pay
ing 7 or 8 per cent, and can apply his net gain for the year to reducing his
Indebtedness. So he gains 2 or 3 per cent by not being obliged to pay casn
for road improvement.
This .condition applies every year and in every community. The man
who always has plenty of canh and no financial obligations is the only on';
who ran afford to pay for roads as ho goes, and he is an exceedingly rave
specimen.
l)o not let this bugaboo about interest on bonds blind you. The pro
posed road bonds will draw only 5 percent, cannot be sold below par. and
' will provide for a permanent systematic road building plan, the only one
ever proposed in Iane County.
llorrowing $2,000,000 on our $33,000,000 assesment Is exactly in the
ratio of a man assessed at $350 borrowing $20. How many successful men
are there who have not obligated themselves to a far greater percentage of
their assessable resources to make Immediately available resources to bene
fit their conditions? '
The amount of interest you will pay on these road bonds will be more
than balanced by your returns from the amount you would be required to
put up were the pay as you go plan in force.
