the Garden of the West.
Lane County. ,
Lane county extends from the summit
of the Cascades to the Pacific Ocean. In
size it is about live times as large as
Rhode Island or Connecticut. It fronts
on the Pacific ft distance of thirty miles,
with a splendid harlior at the city of
Florence. It occupies every altitude
from the ocean beach to the gfa.ior
crowned sumntit of the "Three Sisters"
at the southeastern corner of thecounty.
The Coast llange cuts it in two from
north to south.
I.ane county is half prairie land, with
very rich soilj producing abundant crops
f train, hay, fruit and vegetables, and
half hill and upland. The table-lands
bordering the valleys are partly covered
with timber or brush, most of it W ins
open enough for tine pasture. These
lands are fertile and yield abundant
crops when cultivated. 1" very crop that

plied from natural sources with the best

to Income the Clippie Creek of Oregon,

The population of Lane county is
about 2-000, all white. The county is

STOCK UAISING.
Iaw county is fast Incoming one of
the groat cattle producing counties in
the State. The mild winters, the (act that
native grasses remain green during the
year, and the ease with w hich cultivated
grasses can Ih raised make it an excel
lent country for every kind of stock.
The general practice of Imue county
farmers is to provide fodder for only a
small part of the year, during the bal
ance of which the stock roam at large,
llunning water if abundant, and stock
does not lack water in the driest season.
The largest owners of homed NUx'k are
improving greatly bv infusing fine blood
into their herds. There ate numerous
breeder of Shorthorn, Galloways,
rolled Ancos, Ay rehires, Hereford,
llolsteins, Pevons, Alderncvs and Jer
seys in the Willamette Valley. The
large introduction of tine bh-od into the
cattle herds of this section has greatly
increased their value and the profit or
the business.

Paring the past ten years a nunitarof
our active farmers have lfn introduc
ing the Angora goat into Line county,
especially in the foot-hill country.
These thrifty farmers had but one object
in view at the time these goats were
purchased, and that was to clear up their
farms at small expense. They bought
the goat for his work and not for his
wool. Purine the past five years, how
ever, there has Whmi a great revolution
in the goat industry. Manufactuiers
are beginning to discover the. manv ad
vantage and special ipualities of moliair.
Numerous desirable and elegant fabrics
are now being made from this wool, and
it has Wen fom, 1 that the goods are ex
ceedingly line and durable. Another
special f.-atuie of this goods is, that it is
much more free frmii the attack of
moths than goods made fnuii sheep's
