Page 12 n THE ASIAN REPORTER June 7, 2021 “Painting Paradise: Art of Daisuke Nakano” Upcoming events June 12 to July 18, 2021 Portland Japanese Garden The Portland Japanese Garden is presenting “Painting Paradise: Art of Daisuke Nakano,” a display by the avant-garde visual artist, who uses the centuries-old Nihonga-style painting technique to capture the elusiveness of light and vivacious spirit of wildlife through his screen paintings of imaginary botanical landscapes. Nihonga is a traditional style of Japanese painting created using only organic materials such as pigments from vegetables, minerals, animals, silk, wood, and gold. Masaru tells the story of the Tohoku people and their landscape that reflects ancient Japanese culture. For more information, or to buy advance tickets, call (503) 223-1321 or visit <www.japanesegarden.org>. “Grace, Grit and Gaman” Through December 31, 2021 Japanese American Museum of Oregon The Japanese American Museum of Oregon is presenting “Grace, Grit and Gaman: Japanese-American Women through the Generations,” a new exhibit that shares the rarely revealed story of the grace, grit, and gaman (perseverance) of Japanese-American women. Visitors learn about multiple generations of Japanese- American women and the unique challenges they faced — in their own ways, on their own terms, and in their own times. “Grace, Grit and Gaman” is curated by Linda Tamura and Marsha Matthews.
