Whlla aU admit that the labor troubles this summer were "serious detriment to transfers and an unquestionable clog upon building opera. tlons, that the outlook row is very en couraging. One of the oldest dealers In Portland, In the way of experience, said to The Journal yesterday "The strike was a bad thing and, In my estimation, put Portland a year behind the times, for the accommodations here Sire now entirely inadequate to the needs of our growing population. "The indications are excellent for Splendid trade in Inside property this .' fall. Tou may depend upon It that there . .will be a great deal of property change hands this fall. There will be much activity la building this fall, you may IBepend." 'Among a few transfers of note recently tnads may be noted the following Three lots In Stephens' Addition, bought Jy the Phoenix Iron Works for $6000, William M. Ladd, as executor, etc., to George A. Merrill, a portion of block fclty, for 8660O. A sal in West Irvlngton of two and bne-half lots for 11900 was recorded. Two lota were disposed of at Sunnyslde (or 81100, and two other lots In Haw home's First Addition brought 81000. . In the line of building, the East Side Still seems to keep in the lead. At Bast lAnkeny and East Nineteenth streets, B p. Bernharald Is erecting a two-story Dwelling at a oost of 12500; C. N. Rankin la putting up a $1700 two-story dwelling at East Eighth and Couch; A. B. Bau man will build a two-story dwelling on East Taylor, between East Twenty-sixth anfi East Twenty-seventh, to cost $1800. Four two-story dwellings are to be built sn the East Side by A. T. Myers, each t which will oost $600. They are to be severally located as follows! On East Everett, between Mason and Fulton; on fcast Davis, between Fulton and Alka n East Everett, between Fulton and Alka, and another In the last-named lo ' ration. . Miss Trlgallis will put up a two-story lwelllng at the corner of Halght avenue and Fay. The little suburb of Montavllla will become a pretty big suburb very shortly. Residences are springing up at all points s rapidly as the combination between Carpenters and building material can be effected. As an indication that building opera tions are Improving, an investigation of the Plumbing Inspectors' office clearly hows. Mr. Mulme and each of his as sistants are kept busy In looking into he plumbing arrangements for the new Residences shooting up, almost like mush rooms In all parts of tne city. It is a (act that all the architects offices are llled with work and many plans for lew buildings are being drawn up. THE MARKET Business was dull On Front street today Sn account of the closing of all the re tail groceries in town, the retail asso tlation giving a plcnlo at Canemah Park. All the houses on the street closed promptly at noon to enable their em ployes to attend the festivities. Another advance has been made by the Continental Tobaoco Company. Tester lay afternoon dealers were noticed that r. ' advance of an' additional 1 cent per pound had been made on the quotations f all brands of smoking tobacco manu factured by the combine. This is the third rise In Quotations In a short time, the reduction in the tax Imposed by the government for the war fund was de clared the first of the month, but retail ors are hot benefited. The trust has lalsed the quotations until the price at present is within 1 cent of that formerly tuoted during the maintenance of the , ar tax. ' Yesterday's Journal notified ,ealers of the advance of 1 cent on cHew- tg tobacco. The trust now controls a rge amount of the cigar output In the ountry, and It is said that preparations ire now being made to raise the price Hi the smooking weed. t Two carloads of bananas were received kday and distributed among the dealers. Most of the shipment was in excellent tondltlon, but a, few Nad to be sold to lawkers as second grades. Prices on krat-class stock remain the same. Veal la In large demand, with receipts fery light Other kinds of meat are In lormal receipt for this see son of tha Ear, but fo many people have left for; e coast that tha demand has de creased.
