Frl ' day he did not leave his bed until nearly , - noon, and this worried hia manager and trainer Billy Delaney. Jeffries denies all minora as to hia not being fit, saying: -'Talent late today," aald Jeffries, ba- .. clsoo last nigbt and was very tired., I sun not overtrained, and am In perfect form. t . t ' , -' GRANBT'8 VIEWS. k "" Eddie Graney, the referee of the big fight, baa this to say regarding the cliam- pi on and his condition: 1 James Jeffries la certainly fit as a Jld- tSle for hia defense of the world's cham pionship against his challenger, Robert FitsBframont. He eaya so himself, and - never has If been my good fortune to re- arard a, ' more perfect type of physical manhood than that - portrayed by the champion of all ehamplona when at his eondltlonltlff wnrlr In r. XrTn nrl v..t .rrlo v ' '' Ha certainly seemed trained to the hour , , knd fit 4o enter the ring next Friday to glv perfeot battle, though he will not . be sxunmoned to do so until a week later. . Hal ' breathing la first class, endurance , not , to be ' doubted, muscles ' drawn to their best tension, and on the whole, he Indicates) 'by his appearance a superb physical perfection. '....... Though the claim of overwork made toy many may find aome ellght backing by the slightly "drawn" expression of coun ' tenance of the champion, I am of the opinion that It has no real foundation. r Ono a man starts hard work In earnest he necessarily takes off flesh that causes , an alteration In his general facial ap- - i appearance. f ' Jeffries' sparring with his brother Jack ' jsmd Joe Kennedy yesterday was an ex r Wbltlon that would certainly prove a rev ' ' elation to thoe who have heretofore commonly regarded the champion as slow. ' Jack and Joe seemed absolutely unable to , place a glove upon him. But it was v When he broke three wrist machines In , auooesslon that the spectators really mar- vejen,,.i-. . But with all Jeffries physical fitness , to retain his title of world's champion, - . X would not care, to commit myself as .to hia probability of doing so until the ' conclusion of a visit to my friend Fltat kimmons at Slcaggs Springs. 4 , FITZ FEELS CONFIDENT. " , Springs,, Fits ht this to aay of hia ' chaneea: " v ' .. . - . ."Another jday bearer the fight, and it k can't come' toe? aoon for me.: I think I am In aa good a condition as it U joaslbla to get, At- the advice of my ' trainer, Mr.. Dawson, I am gradually cutting out part, of my work every day, but if I bad my way I would keep n as X have been doing, for it doea not tire ma In the least.- I enjoy itespecially the road Work. X am feeling stronger, better, happier and am mora capable of fighting than at an period of' my life. My, mind n & mm, 0 OF SPORT Is also content, and I am mixing the routine of training with all the pleasures It la possible to obtain in this country resort. I have no fears for the 25th, and I think that when the time cornea I will be able to give a good account of myself, I do not Intend to disappoint my friends If I can. help it. " "Are you not surprised at the odds which are being offered' on Jeffries T" the Australian was asked recently. "Not much," said he. "I thought Jeff would, be the favorite, but that dots not disturb me a bit. ' 1 guess he should be the favorite, he ha. beaten 'me once, but i .think, they are making A mistake In offering,, such oddk Betting cuts no fir ure. See what the Odds were when Cor bett beat Suluvan; - when Jeffries beat ma and when Corbett ' beat McGovern were all three to one shots or worse and yet they, won. Now, keep your eye on my case, and see If another three to one shot. does not cop the long end of the -purse." ; ' ' BRITT AND OANS. Now, don't be astonished if you read of Jimmy Brltt. signing articles ' with Joe Gans , to .fight for . -ne lightweight cham pionshlp of . the world before . the latter leavea California. ; Jimmy drew the color line before Gans copped the "belt from Erne. When ha heard that the two were matched he Supposed that there was nothing to it bu the white-faced fighter and he figured on getting him next. But Gans surprised him, and aa Joe is right In his prime and fighting splendidly, he stands a chance of holding the champion ship a long time. The only way he can lose It is by some young, ambitious fighter like Britt jumping 4n and trim ming him. Certainly none of the old di vision have a ghost of a show beating Herford'a m&nr;;He -can beat them all just as easily as he put McFaflden away. Brltt Is no fool, and he realises that, If Gana is to be beaten, somebody of his youth and strength and clayerness must turn the trick. ' 'sJr' ' ' ...... .. . - y , . TURNER SUSPICIOUS. Manager, BUly lAvigne, of the Acme Club, tried to get Ruf e Turner to com plete his training , in 'Frisco, but the colored lad expressed a desire to stay in Stockton, as he was surrounded by -his friends and had all toe conveniences for training. : George V Eckard, manager , of Turner,, has written Lavigne that he must provide scales a. the clubhouse, so that Gans and Turner can weigh In at the ringside. George fears .that, Al Herfordi will bring his own scales to the Pavilion, , and he is hot taking fany ChanceW,. li,-:"; - . : , Ha want Gans to be within the light weight : limit: otherwise he will draw down the forfeit. . Herford says Gans will make the weight without any trouble. He laughs at the js'taiements going around that Gans can't " make 13S pounds. : He says Joe la working like a Trojan and will be In perfect shape when he enter the ring, .
