Th Banfield-Veysey Company is said to be visiting Its largest customers and In forming them that if they do not con tlau to take its slabwood they will be boycotted by the various members of tha Bhnployera Association. ' On th other hand, the teamsters visit thm and explain that th unions wilt In- fur their business It they do not cease Patronising the boycotted Arm.' With , both sides working upon them, many of the firms believe that th only solution Of th dilemma in which they are placed Is to make arrangements to put in oil- turners, There is ne Indication of an early at- tlement of the strike. The sawmtlls are losing -heavily every day that It contin ue, and era doing all in their power to assist the boycotted firm. It is said that Mr. Banfield attempted to form an asso elation with the object In view of en deavering to bring such pressure to bear upon the breweries that they would have to get their fuel from him. The effort failed, " as the breweries combined and dm arrangements to get ruei rrom otn r sources where none but union drivers are employed. Other companies are following their lead, and It begins to' look aa if both sides will soon be represented by glgan tlo combinations with opposing ideas. The conteat for ' aupermacy gives every evl dene of being bitterly fought out The men say that about all they intend to do at present Is to enforce the bor cott. They believe this will be sufllclent to gain recognition from the Banneld Veyaey ' Company. E. Tooley, the bual- neaa agent of the union, say the situa tion looks promising. A fight was made against the same company a year ago,' and it continued three months, resulting in compromise. The present struggle has been id existence but three weeks. In spite of the higher freight rates paid then. John Hermann, known along the water front of the Sound and San Francisco as "Bismarck," was murdered by the na tives of St Lawrence Island early In May. Charles A. Boyle, second mate of the steam whaling vesael William Bay- less, gave the new in a letter written to friends at Seattle. Hermann was kHled by medicine men of St. Lawrence Isl and. They supposed he was responsible tor a large number of deaths that have occurred In the Indian tribe during the past year. The freight rates on coal between Aus tralia and San Francisco and Honolulu have fallen so low that vessels are re turning in ballast rather than toad with the product The rate paid to some ves sels this year has been aa low as $2 per ion. Th big barge Telephone, recently built at Aberdeen, Wash., to be used in carry ing grain on . the Sacramento River, la now en ifoute from- Grays Harbor, where an was mint to the Golden Gate. Farmers should sell their eggs now as It is unlikely that another advance can be made on th prices. Ther was no receipts today. .The provision market Is quite firm with receipts light The prospects are that price will not make any . further ad Vance for; soma time, if at all. , At the present time it looks more like a' decline will take place soon. Meats are higher this year than for many years past Th prices at present have been unhearij of for tbl season of the year. , There were no receipts of local fresh meats today, Butter still holds its own with the very beat brands of creamery selling at 85 cents a pound.' Some of the lesser known brands are still quoted at 22V4 cents. The reason for the stiffness in th quotations of butter is that the ice cream manufae turers are using- such an enormous amount of cream. Store and dairy butter are firm at former quotations. The vegetable market is entirely cleaned up of vegetables today. The steamer Co lumbia wpi arrive this evening from San Francisco and the markets will be well supplied tomorrow morning with - fresh vegetable and small fruits of all kinds. Tomatoes are In larger receipts today, the California product being the only supply. No changes appear In quotations.
