The woman was very much frightened and without daring to disturb the corpse at once ran away. Suspecting, however, that the corpse was that of Merrill, she at once sent word to Sheriff Edward Peggler, of Lewis County, who ImmedU ately left for the spot ' i , . THREE WOUNDS. - On arrirlng there with a force of depu ties Sheriff Deggler examined the body thoroughly. He discovered three wounds, one through the back, one through the head and a slight.' wound on one wrist Either of the first two would have been fatal. Near the spot where the body was found Sheriff peggler picked up. three 30-30 Winchester shells-the same aa those used by Tracy and from the position of the wounds which were exactly as Tracy has boasted, he Is certain that one of the bandits has at last been accounted for. By the time the Sheriff had finished his examination the night had fallen, so, leaving deputies to guard the body all night he at once returned to Chehalls and wired Warden Janes of the Salem, penitentiary, who was at Seattle, to come and Identify the body. THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE A meeting of the Chamber of Com merce trustees was held this morning, it which not much business was transacted. A communication was , received from Nome, Alaska, requesting Information as to whether Portland could -furnish -the miners of Alaska a steamer to sail from Nome about October IS,:, to carry about too passenger. This was referred to the transportation commltteeT ' ' - A request for five delegates from the Chamber of Commerce to the Interna tionU .Mining Congress, to be .held at Butt in, the early part of September, was referred to the mining committee. : A letter from P. C. Helm of San Fran deco requesting the Indorsement of the passage of the following bills before Con gress was referred to a special commit--tee! According to the desperado he killed his partner on July 2nd and It is now almost certain that what was generally regarded as a boastful lie, was In reality a fearful' truth. BODY BEING BROUGHT IN. SEATTLE, July It-Merrill's body, found by a woman and a boy, named Roberts, yesterday, near the main road below Chehalls, in the place described by v Tracy. The boy. saw a hand and foot pro jecting from between two logs and he called Superintendent of the Reform School Weatendorf. Deputy Sheriff Brin ker and a newspaper man watched the body all night Coroner Green, of Lewis County, has gone e bring the body Into Chehalls. Everything confirms Tracy's story, as the body, is dressed as last seen when he and "Merrill were together. HOW'MERRILL DIEDf Tracy's story of the killing of Merrill, Is -that while in the vlclntty of Castle Rock, Tracy learned that Merrill was re sponsible for his getting Into the Oregon penitentiary. Merrill wag a hindrance In the flight anyway, he said. He was care less, and left a trail like a log, so Tracy resolved to pick a quarrel with him. In this he succeeded, and the two agreed to fight out their differences ih an open spot. Standing back to back, it was agreed that each should advance 10 paces, turn and fire. Tracy, looking over his shoul COBALT FOR -v GERMANY Zoeth Houser, ex-United States Mar shal, is In the city today from his home In Pendleton: Mr. Houser Is the presi dent of the Standard Gold and Copper Mining Company, which owns and oper ates the Standard mine In the Quartz burg district near the Sumpter mining district Mr. Houser made an important and interesting statement today, which may mean a great deal for the future. "On Thursday," said Mr. Houser. "our mine will have in a shipment of between four and Ave tons of gold cobalt at Baker City. This la the beginning of regular shipments to Germany of this product. At present the United States imports an ually about ,(100,000 worth of this product I believe : that our mine is the only gold cobalt mine on the Pacific Const." Four Catling guns were brought down from Fort Sheridan this morning in an ticipation of trouble following the efforts of merchants to move- their goods. While eating breakfast In the shanty, at South Bay, Wash., before starting on his sensational trip to Seattle on the gasoline launch N. St 8., Tracy told the story of Merrill's death. At that time and since the toe has been regarded as a lie de signed to cover Merrill's escape, but to day's developments show that the desper ado told only tha bare truth and that his companion In crime fell beneath his rifle from a dastard shot in the back. Tracy's story of the deed is aa follows: "I shot him in the back," said Tracy, "but be was going to shoot me. We quarreled. The day before the quarrel we found a newspaper which contained an account of our escape and the pur suit That account gave Merrill equal credit with myself for the deeds which I alone committed. The newspapers since, we escaped have all along persisted in giving him equal credit for the escape and the get-away with me. The fact of the case is that he did not have the nerve of a rabbit. He always wanted to sneak through the country, keeping un der, xiover and preferred to go hungry rather than show himself for the purpose of getting food. TRACY WAS JEALOUS. "That is not my style. No man can take me alone. And if I had a proper traveling companion, a man of nerve, I couldn't be taken by a regiment of dep uties. If I am shot it will be from be hind. And with another man to guard the opposite direction, a man of some nerve who knew how to handle a gun, we could go wherever we wanted to and not be compelled to keep .under cover a portion HEAVY July Corn Went Down With a Run Today in Chicago. fScrlpps-McRae News Association.) CHICAGO, July 15. July corn continued to slump today, dropping from 81 at last night's close, to 69V4 within an hour after the Board of Trade opened. Liberal of ferings are responsible for the decline of the shorts who ran up the price on them selves last week, being plentifully sup plied. The Gates-Harris people say they are not hurt by the decline as they bought their heavy line of corn at low prices. They insist that they will win,' and are confidently predicting the return of the high prices of last week. "But Merrill was no good. He was nev er anything but an Impediment to me, and I am glad he is out of the way. I never could trust him on guard except in places where there was no. danger, anyway, and then he was so, frightened that at times 'v. . he would wake, me up needlessly in the . ' ' ' '4'..;- " reporters and the pople thought he had some nerve it made me hot I thought at first f would shake him and travel alone, but before we decided to separate I taunt- ed him with his cowardice and he got - , . huffy. Then we agreed to fight a duel. ... This was in the woods in Lewis County, not far from Chehalls. . A REGULAR DUEL. "We agreed to start together from a line and walk ten steps each, in opposite directions from each other, and then turn simultaneously aqoV .begin firing. From his haggling In. arranging the terms, I was convlneed that he was intending to turn before he had. taken the ten steps, t .... and I was determined not to let him get the drop on me. So when I had t liken eight steps, I turqed around and took a shot at him. I fcttj Vua in the back. The first shot did not finish him and I shot again. I then concealed the body in the brush nad proceeded on my way. TRACT'S JUSTIFICATION. "Merrill only got what he deserved. He intended to turn and shoot me in the back, then he would have sneaked out of i the country through the big timber and wcfuld not have been heard of for months, I would hot only have been dead, but would never have been found, because he would have been afraid to tell where my body was." THE WEATHER. The disturbance noted yesterday as ap proaching the Washington coast has moved to Eastern British Columbia. It bas caused squally south to West winds. with showers in Northwest Oregon and Washington. A stranger dropped Into the Courthouse today and asked Sheriff W. A. Storey If he had a warrant td collect the bicycle taxes. The Individual was sore 'because he was deprived of his unlicensed bicycle by a deputy, and wanted to see If he couldn't get even. Sheriff Storey consult ed County Judge Webster, and was told that the law authorised the County Cora mlssloners'to issue a warrant to the Sher iff permitting him to make aeiaures. McCroskey May Live. L. McCroskey, who was shot by A. L. Beldlng. last Friday evening, is improv ing slowly and hopes are entertained for his recovery. Tracy has been lo cated south of Buckley, on the Gold Hill trail. He Is making for Notlchei Pass on horseback, and is said to be close pressed by the Pierce County Sheriff and a posse, who are also on horseback. Ha took breakfast with a Packer on the trail this morning. This Is the first defi nite location of Tracy In two days. The National Amateur Tournament Is in Full Swing. James didn't take that-view of th case, and told her so. His decision apparently made her despondent, and, after ex changing her bicycle for a revolver' and cartridges, she called on the recalcitrant James either to bid him a last farewell or to Induce him to kiss and make up. Kissing, etc., she found was not In his line, and, after a few words, she pulled the gun from the folds of her dress and flred point blank at herself. Needless to say, she missed. James took away the weapon, and now ' Annie will have to struggle through the vale of tears yet a few more struggles. , VERDICT OF $1000.
