' , 'In this connection it ought to be stated that some members of the Common Coun cil have afall times been favorable to the passing of this ordinance, and it is believed that those of the council who opposed it would not have done so had they known that the opposition originated with, and was created and encouraged by some existing electric lines In this city, but chiefly by , the railroad ' com pany having stations at the points named. "Upon reflection it la apparent that the proposed line must open up conveniences, especially to those residing between this city and the points named, for travel and traffic which are not and will not likely be furnished by the several lines whose formidable opposition has thus far blocked Its entrance into the city ot Port land.
