Twenty years ago Mr. Hewett served as Councilman from the First Ward and was President of the Council at the elmt of the celebrated . contest between Hon Joseph Simon and Hon. D. P. Thompson, As Councilman he knew no friend or foe, no rich or poor, but was always fair and upright 'with all, and he has not changed these business methods yet. He has had much experience in street and road-making. RECORD YEAR FOR SETTLERS (Journal Special Service.) DULUTH, Minn., May 18. The present year promises to break all records in the volume of Immigration to this jart of the Northwest. For two months the newcomers have been pouring Into Du-, luth at the rate of a dozen carloads weekly, and from this city they have scattered all over Upper Micnigan, Wis consin, Minnesota, the Dakotas and as far west as Montana. The majority of the foreigners come from Finland, the number of Finns far exceeding the Swedes and Norwegians, who formerly were in a large majority. The bulk of the Finns push on westward to the farm ing regions , of the Northwest. There also has been a large number of Italian Immigrants this season, the most of them settling In the Iron and copper dis tricts of the upper peninsula. NEW TORK, May 28.-Th!s was a busy day for the distinguished French visitors, including the Comte and Comtesse de Rochambeau, General Brugero. Admiral Fornlere and the other members of the mission sent by France to attend the Rochambeau monument unveiling. This morning there was a visit to Grant's tomb, after which the party 'were enter tained at luncheon at Claremont, the host being Mayor Low and th other invited guests Including a number of prominent New Yorkers. This afternoon General Brugere and Admiral Fornlere gave a re ception aboard the Gaulois. At Sherry's this evening the visitors dine as guests of the French Chamber of Commerce. SHOALS, IndM May 2S.-Davld Salman, a veteran soldier and pensioner, married a widow four years ago and after num erous quarrels they separated a few weeks ago. He went to the residence wnere sbe was staying, and upon her refusal to live with him again he shot her dead. He then shot himself through the heart.. In all probability there will, be no road races on Decoration Day this year as usual. The Y. M. C. A. has been taking the Initiative In these events heretofore, but this year, probably owing partly to the backward season, the customary In terest has been lacking. Fred T. Merrill has received a poster from Olympia announcing a great bicy cle meet to be held at the Velodrora there Decoration Day. Among the large number of crack riders to compete for prises Is "Dutch" Waller, the famous six-day rider, twice champion of the world, and who rode & bicycle 44 con aecutive hours without a single dis mount. Eddie Allen, formerly a Ram bier rider in this city, is one of the com pernors, wno is also Interested In pro moting the meet, Rucker, also known in Portland, will take part Eighteen miles over ft rough road. made In 60 minutes, is considered pretty good work. "Bob" Blodgett and Andy Frits rode in from Pleasant Home last Sunday in that time, with no idea of making a record, but simply for the sake of a little spurt. The motor cycle has cope to give the bicyclist a hot pace. A number of the boys have been out limbering up behind these automatic machines this week in training for the races to be nad at Sa lem, Sunday, June 1, on the occasion of the Federated Trades excursion. The pace set is a mile in from 1:46 to 1:55. On a banked track motor cycles in the East have made it in 1:36. In the opinion of one of the bicycle dealers, there is more riding for business and less for pleasure this year than for merly. The wheel has com to be known as almost necessity . for - the collector who works all parts of the city and de livery boys can Hardly get ( a Job any more without providing themselves with a bicycle. People who live out In the suburbs find that it ie economy in the saving of street car fares to ride wheels to and from their places of business; he- sides many of those - who follow seden tary occupations feel much better from the exercise derlveu from .wheeling. Dealers have all laid In large stocks to meet the demands ol the rural dis tricts which seem to be greater rela tively than those of the city Most all the bicycle dealers report good sales since the prospect of cycling weath er promise so much.
