These are supported by Iron pillar. The work Of aettlnf the granite bases for' the piers far the. fronts, are go ing en, affd the next step is the laying fHhe pressed brick fronts. The bricks are df 4 dark-red color, And are made at ttewberf. ' ; . . r ' ... iThe old Wilding on Taylor street, op posite the. Taylor-Street M. EX Church, which has f of so many years been an aye-sore to the public, has at last gone down before the hand of Improvement. The building adjoining, which Is occu pied by Chinese, is very filthy. It could be greatly improved upon in lte appear ance and aawtary cohditlonrf 'Now that the foundation walls to the annex to the First National Bank are completed, the floor beams are going in and the erection of the front cS cut stone witt Immediately follow. The brick wall of tho main building will not be out through until the annex is finished; The work on the new Falling building, at Third and Morrison, is going on as rapidly as could be expected. The Northern Pacific office, directly Ap posite, if gradually approaching' a more finished appearance. The elegant ma hogany counters with brass trimmings, hew mahogany desks, tile flooring, and Bide shd front entirely composed of French plate glass, together with the concrete walks alreadjMiOwn on the Mor rison sido and being laid on the Third street aide,, will make this one of the handsomest corners in the city. The labor of, laying the concrete foun dations and cross walls of the T. M. Richardson building are making satis factory progress. At the point where Burnslde and Wash ington streets cross, there is a fractional block, 60 feet wide at one end and. 20 feet wide at the other. rlts length on Wash ington street Is MO feet. This Is owned by the Eepey estate. For many years it has been the site of a number of old shacks which have at last given away to the demands of this modern age. Arcnl tect Martin is preparing plans for a two tory wooden building, to cost 110,006 on this ground,' The ground floor Is to be utilised by stores, and the upper floor will be arranared for flats. Henry Monastes and Tyler Woodward, it well as other property owners at the eorner of Fourth and Yamhill, have set an example which will bear emulation. In a great many places, where the paving 4 blocks have proven defective and have rotted away, these property owners have bad sufllclent enterprise to have them re placed. If this was generally done, the appearance of Portland streets could be vastly Improved and that at a compar atively trifling expense. J. B. Wetherbee Is erecting a two-story dwelling at the corner of Tillamook and East Nineteenth streets, te cost $3,600. A, S. Brasneld la also putting up a one Btory dwelling at the same location to cost S3.50O when It is finished. At tile corner of Weldler street and Williams avenue, Agnes Nolan is erecting a two-story dwelling to cost $1550. Building permits have also been issued for the following: To 8. C. Catchlngs, for a two-story dwelling at East Taylor and East Fif teenth streets, to cost $100. To Harriet Kennedy, repairs on her HE REPORTS GAINS chairman White Predicts a Sure Victory for Chamberlain. Chairman Sam White of the Demo cratic SUte Central Committee, has re turned from Dufur, I Wasco County, where he held an enthusiaetlo Democrat ic meeting on Monday night Mr. White upon hie return made the following state ment: "Wasco County will go for Chamber lain and .Butcher, and the rest of the "ticket will make tremendous gains. Pre vious estimates which we had given that they would corns to Multnomah County out of Eastern Oregon with 1200 to 1500 1 majority are confirmed, in my estima tion, In k far as Wasco County Is con cerned by the Information! I secured while there. . - " , ' "1 will state it In this way: Furnlah's apparent strength Is not his real strength, his real .strength being much less than that which appears upon the. surface. Mr. Chamberlain's apparent strength, is not so great as his real strength, and this, too, in spite of tho fact that apparently he has the election assured." In other words, while It is ap parent that Mr. Chamberlain is sure of the election, he Is making such constant .and heavy gains, not only there, but In other parts of the state, that I believe his majority wilt be something aston ishingly large. The rest of the state ticket Is making a splendid showing." - - THE TIMBER TRADE Consul Tistoe has written to the State Department from Rotterdam, Holland, on the market of American lumber.. He .says in part: "The Netherlands buy, as a rule,, with the exception Of pitch pine, very little lumber from America,. but a good many -'logs. The sale of the latter is fair and "the business prospect is not unfavorable. . "Germany (which country la supplied from this port to a great extent) buys more lumber than Jogs. Conditions there have not as yet improved much since last year,"; Though money has become cheap; , ar, the trade continue dull, and pros pacts are pot very bright for any great : rrttfi t the lumber tra l ' " . , -n - - . .,- property at Gideon and ' Vary streets. $1000. r .i:.v;4.v;-'a-: To F.-.'C Btreyffelar, . for a two-story dweeUlng at East Thirty-fifth and Brook lyn streets, to cost 3H00. Lindsley of the Title Guarantee and Trust Company ''Property is stilly n iuvdi uiuuna, we jsnouia oaruuiuy be enabled to Sell more were it not for the strikes. We And an increasing de mand tor suburban aorease. "The present low Interest rates of from to 7 per cent as against, those of 8 or more formerly prevailing, has done much to encburara investment. Althoufh the strikes have affected sale somewhat, we haven't experienced the set-back that we expected. At the outset; there was so much uncertainty as to the probable out come that In some instances contractors aotually put their houses Into Our hands for sale. In a little while, as -soon as they noticed bow matter Were going, they took the property out of our hands again, and did not care to sell atalL "We are selling more property in the Tllton tract at present than anywhere else, the class of houses here being put up average in price about $1,500. We are selling a great deal of property also at Sunnyslde and in North Irvlugton, as wen as down on the Peninsula." . Mr. LIndsley was asked why It la that property is more eagerly Bought in one part of the city than in another, appar ently as well situated. "That is a pecu liarity," said he, "that no one can en tlrely account for. Some years ago in the early 'We every one believed that Peruana would speedily become like San Francisco. ' la consequence 1 ots wera snapped up anywhsrs on the top or the sides of the hills surrounding the main part of the town. "After a time. when the whim changed, Portland Heights, a really excellent loca tion, was made to suffer, yet this is in many respects a most delightful place for homes. , "Another Instance cornea to mind. Men who some years ago made Investments On the Peninsula, were laughed at The trend of affairs has amply justified their lor.g-slghtedneaa Persona are eargerty buying property on the Peninsula now. and It Is very popular. M. E. Thompson: "For two weeks past there -has been a lull in 'the real estate market To my mind this has been due to existing or impending strikes. Real estate is a sensitive as a barometer. When there fas a clash between employe and employer on the tapla or is already going on, word is quietly passed from mouth to mouth that such is the case. "It Is simply a case of struggle between labor and capital. In such instances real estate, the foundation of monetary value, Is the first to feel it All these things be ing so, many deals that would otherwise have been closed, are still hanging fire. As soon as matters shall have quieted down, and the labor disturbances shall have been settled then real estate will move as rapidly as before. "Persons who Intend to build feel the effect of the uncertainty of labor, and so hesitate to make improvements; or. In some instances to buy lots for the purpose of building thereon. The present quiet condition of the market is only tempor ary." Renkel & Baker: "We have recently sold the Krueger farm In Washington County to Professor Watta. of Amity, for $2.77B. We have also sold W. S. Toole's farm of 65 acres near Albany to Everett Young, of Pawnee, Neb. This brought. $6,000. We have just disposed, also, of a residence at Eighteenth and Edgar streets for $1,000.
