Ja z z , as I recall, began with the
firs t world w ar, around 1918. Sin ce
then it has been hiccoughing its

ch o k e out th e la st vestage of real
and good m u sic w hich a corrupted
popular ta ste can no longer endure
or a p p reciate .
A fu rth e r con sid eratio n of jazz
m ight lead one to conclude th at it
belongs to ab ou t th e sam e class of
th in g s as do glu ttony, drunkenness,
and sen su ality in gen eral. In fa ct,
m uch o f m odern jazz Is only a
kind o f libid inous stim ulation.
M any find it a kind of opiate to
an accu sin g co n scie n ce from which
th ey w ant to get aw ay from. L ik e
alcohol, It is a fa lse redeem er. In ­
stead o f escap e o r happiness, it
b rin g s only b itte rn e s s afterw ard s.
T h e point o f the whole m atter
seem s to be th a t m an cannot go
ag a in st h is e sse n tia l or tru e nature
w ithout s u ffe rin g and obviously
jazz is an ah n o rm al and unhealthy
th in g th a t sim ply can n o t fit into
h is norm al n atu re.
B u t m an is a sin n e r—that is, he
lives and a c ts a g a in st his tru e wel­
fa re even w hile he know s it and
d oesn't like it. He d efies his own
ideal p o ssib ilities and jazz is ju s t
th a t.
H ere we m od erns a re : anxious,
w orried, fru stra te d , . . . facing the
ab y ss o f fu tility and m eaningless­
ness fo r w hich ja z z is offered as
a palliative only to worsen the
whole m a tte r by adding discord to
in n er tu m ult.
A m erica needs d esp erately som e­
th in g to produce in n er serenity,
co h eren ce, and m ean in g to life and
th a t is the fu n ctio n o f good m usic.
