As the carriage and the wagon rattled along our highways in the years gone by, their drivers and occu pants were accustomed to offer greetings, and sometimes halted their vehicles to exchange ideas. There was a spirit of comradeship among travelers, and the road was ever a friendly one. Today- by contrast, the roadwav is the path of strag ers disinterested in the weal and woe of om another. Cars speed by whose drivers have no time for nods or even for gestures of salutation. But if anything is ex pressed at the passing of another car, i? is too often a bitterly uttered criticism of the other fellows driving. In place of the cordial smiles and halloos of the older travelers, our motorists are given rather u* glaring and growling at one another, so frequently is one annoyed because of the slowness of the fellow ahead, or at his ap parent stupidity in his awkward crossing of our path. There is compensation, however, in the fact that our maddest drivers, our most peevish and fretful on« s, when off the roadway- in auto camps or other puhiic places, are themselves at-tin, and show true congenial itv, courtesy and obligingness. Our sellishuess, conceit c«!ncss and snobbishness on the roadway doesn't, after all, benefit us. The smiling and courteous driver get* further than all his contrary spirited fellow. He may jog along in a contentedly easy going fashion, to the irritation of the go get-'em driver behind him, who thinks that roads were constructed pur posely for grouch) speeders hut he is far happier ami richer in the joys of life than hi> nervous follower, ami with his caution and care to never unnecessarih offend any one, he is doing something beneficial to himself and his fellowtnen. What is true on the real roadway is true on the fig | urative highway of life. Away from the competitive struggle for existence, which we frequently make un duly hard for our fellow competitors, we are at heart the best of fellows. But too many of us are given to go ing grouchilv along that metaphorical roadway, and too seldom are really human toward each other. Thc friendly traveler lend* encouragement when or wherever he can.
