Beaverton’s New Council Takes Oath and Office In au g u ratio n C erem o n ies H eld on M onday N ig h t in C ity H all *nr t t ~ w OTTO ERICKSON AGAIN MAYOR Voters Return Recorder Thyng as Clerical End of Council by Substantial Majority F The first meeting and inauguration of Beaverton's city council for the year 1928 was held in the city hall on Monday evening, following a short session by the retiring board, presided over by ex-M ayor Pegg, to clean up certain unfinished business and pass on current expenditures of the past m onth T he 1927 council consisted of VV. F.. Pegg. mayor, ami \V F. Bishop, F. E. Dietsch, A. E. Wilson, ami W. J. Raynard, the latter two holding over.. T he mayor and two retiring councilmen wero succeeded by O tto Erickson, and W. M. Manning ami H arry Alexander, respectively. The oath of office was a dm in istered by Recorder T hyng to the incoming members. On taking the chair, Mayor Erickson arose in a true spirit of progressive cooperation anil offered the following as an o u t line of the y ear’s duties and t lu disposition in which he would ca deavor to advance the city’s best interests: T o the members of the City Council and citizens of the town of B e a v e rto n : In once again assuming the of- fice of Mayor, l wish to impress one thought to all, that at all times my actions will be with the thought, “ W ha t will be the best for Beaverton,” and my efforts will be concentrated on any plan te n d ing to its grow th and im prove ment. By w orking in harm ony with the remainder of the city government much good can be accomplished. W e have two m ajor projects in hand for the following year which means much to Beaverton, namely, the widening of Broadway, anil the route of the highway through our town from the convergence of the Beaverton-Bertha highway and Canyon road on the east, west to Stipe’s Garage, thence south to the Bank corner anil west to Ce- dar street. By the city working in conjunc- non with the State Highway Dept, undoubtedly some amicable agree ment can be reached whereby the expenses can be borne jointly, thus relieving the property owners of assuming an individual burden which is a benefit to the town at large. Th e w ater question this year, as in years past, will be a trouble- some one. T h e retiring council after consistently trying to solve the leakage in the Bull Run w ater pipe has done the only thing pos- sible under the circumstances by securing cheaper w ater from the Tualatin Y’alley Co. Bull Run advertise- w ater may be a fine inent, but under conditions which it has been operating is prohibi t i \ e ; at some future time Bull Run w ater may be feasible for Beaverton. Beaverton needs a sewage sys tem ami the time is not far dis tant when the business interests will demand that something be clone. The health of our citizens must be placed ahead of any thought of cost. Broadway street neeils more parking space, and the solution seems to be to open up more side streets and alleys, so our m erch ants may unload their merchandise and park their cars, jointly on the main street with their customers A little more civic pride in cleaning up rubbish and refuse front our streets would ai»l m a terially in the appearance of the u >w n ami 1 will advocate the pass- mg of laws to that effect T o work intelligently and h a r moniously with the city council will be my aim tor the follow ing year." O tto Erickson Mayor Speaking of the w ater situation, it may be of interest to our reader- to know that the cost to the city was, the past year, reduced about two-thirds. In December, 1926, our bill for Bull Run w ater was $900, a- against approximately $300 in De cember 1927. Before adjourning Mayor Erickson appointed the following committees S tre e ts—Alexander and M anning binance—Raynard and Wilson. Sanitation—E ntire Council. ( ily A ttorney—Allen, re-appointed Health officers—Dr. Mason and Dr. Welsh Police Chief—Story, re-appointed W a te r Superintendent—T. A. D en ison, appointed for one month, with instruction to keep a daily record of his activities. On motion duly made and sec '»tided the Recorder was authorized to hire an accredited accountant to audit the books, this action being taken at the suggestion of Recorder Thyng. A petition and resolution from several abutting property owners for lie improvement and widening of Broadway was received and the Re order instructed to post same a c cording to law. President Pinder of the Chamber »f C ommerce appeared before the 103 rd and invited the members to cannery meeting on Tuesday night. After several other minor m atters were disposed of the Council a d journed. And with out a doubt a cannery can be located at Beaverton provided there is sufficient acreage planted to fruits and vegetables to w arrant such an investment.
