Newspaper and Church But
No Postoffice Or Saloon.
The first number of the l.awton Stand
ard was issued Friday, Frank G. Hull,
editor. It is customary to throw a boquet
at every newspaper that makes its ap
pearance, and Till: MlNliK herewith tosses
its floral offering to the Standard not be
cause it is customary, however, but be
cause it Is a rattling good paper. One fa
miliar with the technique of the business,
mechanically and editorially, can see at a
glance that Mr. Hull Is dead onto his job.
I hat his head is level, tills from his intro
ductory remarks Is submitted as proef:
"Our politics is the development of this
country, and, incidentally, the enlarge
ment of our bank account." Then he
makes some remarks about the paper be
ing all home print that "ring the bell,"
hut will undoubtedly be considered by
some newspaper people to be pointed re
flections on their judgment. 1 he follow
ing news paragraphs are taken from the
Standard:
l.awton is to have a water works sys
tem. The water will be taken from a
large spring joo feet above the town,
which will give a pressure strong enough
to demolish the strongest building. I he
pipe for the mains is to be ordered the first
of the week.
I he Standard believes it Is the first pa
per ever published in a town before the
advent of a postollice. There may have
been others, but If so, we have never
heard of them. It can truly be said that
we are "In on the ground floor."
Never before In the history of new min
ing iamp lias the church preceded the
saloon, l.awton has had the privilege
of listening to three excellent sermons on
as many Sundays, by Brother G. W.
Kennedy, and still the saloon is yet In the
the background. Hut the saloon is com
ing a dozen or more strong.
Dr. W. U. Ward, of Sumpter, is nego
tiating with the towuslte people for the
construction of a $ 10,000 hospital. For
this purpose a large plat of ground will
be given In the most valuable residence
portion of the town. It Is altogether prob
able that the deal with Dr. Ward will be
made and the work on the structure be
gin at once.
Just before going to press, W. W. Rob
bins, manager of the Concord Gold Min
ing company's properties, Informs us that
the tunnel which he lias been driving at
the rate of live feet per day has encount
ered and crosscut the ledge at 210 feet in.
.Mr. Robbius states that the vein is from
20 to 25 feet wide, and is of the regular
tvpical Ned Hoy mountain ore. A drift
has been driven along the foot wall a dis
tance of ); feet, and returns just received
Horn a general sample of the live-foot face
gave the net value in gold and silver of
$40.(0 per ton. The ledge was encount
ered at a point about $0 feet west of the
west side line of the Concord claim of the
Red Hoy group, and is thought by many
to be the south extension of the Hlaiue
ledge of the Ned Hoy group. This is con
Mdered by many to be the most important
-.trike made in this section since the now
lamous Red Hoy discovery.
The O. K. mine, located adjoining the
townsite of l.awton, is one of the richest
discoveries of free gold matter ever made
in the Northwest. The vein is thirtv feet
in width and assays from I7 to 7 per
ton. Mr. Sam Wilson, the discoverer, be
gan work on his tunnel four months ago
and has penetrated upwards of 100 feet,
alone and unaided, Into the bowels of ma
jestic Spokane mountain. The O. K. Is
a safe milling proposition from the begin
ning and is admirably situateJ. The tun
nel penetrates the extreme base of the
mountain, the apex of which Is easily
2000 feet above that point. This gives an
immense depth with but comparatively
little labor, an advantage greatly appreel
ated by the professional miner. The O
K is owned by Mr. Willson and some
Boise parties. Just what disposition will
be made of the property Is not known as
yet, but it is understood a large mill will
be erected and the mine placed on a work
ing basis as soon as possible.

Located First in 1874, Relocated a Few
Weeks Since.
The La Grande correspondent of the
Portland Telegram springs tills interesting
story on the reading public:
ToJay Jack McCombs, perhaps one of
the oldest prospectors on the Pacific coast,
passed through La Grande en route to his
claim, located, he says, near the North
Fork of the John Day.
Mr. McCombs says he Is 60 years of
age and has been in the mountains al
most continually for the past 25 years;
that he located several claims in the vi
cinity of where Granite now is in 1874!
that lie and another man left their dig
gings, on the Feather river, in California,
to make a prospecting trip through Ore
gon at that time, and on that trip located
the same ledge, near the North Fork of
the John Day, which he relocated several
weeks ago.
He said he had seen so much in the
California papers about the wonderful
strikes being made in eastern Oregon
that lie concluded to come up to see if he
could lind any of his claims. He says
the claims in the Granite district which
he staked yeais ago, one of which is now
the Magnolla,areall located, being worked
and are great properties. The only claim
he located at that time tint lie found un
healed, was his John Day claim, which
lie says is the finest copper proposition he
has ever seen. The leJge Is fifteen feet
wide and is identical with that of the
Granite and Grand Ronde river mining
claims.
"Why," saiJ Mr. McCombs, "I propose
to live on that ledge the rest of my life.
It is the greatest mine for surface show
ing I ever heard of. On samples chipped
right off of the top of the ledge, that we
sent to San Francisco a short time ago
for assays, we procured I065 in gold. The
formation in which this claim is located
Is granite and cyanite and Is In a south
westerly direction from Granite. At a
depth of 20 feet on the ledge we procured
an assay of 1 1040.10 In gold and $8.50 in
silver. The returns from this assay came
to us this week. I believe, sir, that I am
not overdrawing it when I say we have
.1 million dollar mine in sight.
"You La Grande people, though, have
the same thing: the trend of the mineral
belt at the head of the Grand Monde River
and Granite leads right to my claim. The
boom that will be on in the near future
will be the greatest ever known In the
history of mining. The mineral district,
now but little known, reaching from the
John Day to the head of the Grand
Ronde River, southwest of La Grande, is
on the verge of one of the greatest mining
booms ever heard of, there being now
moneyed mining men coming in by stage,
via Sumpter, every day from all sections
of the world.
"Our claim Is not on exhibition, nor Is
it for sale. There are any amount of
good claims over there, some of which
show 'gopher holing' by prospectors
many years ago.
"My partner and I followed the summit
of the mountain almost through from the
John Day to Granite, and that is the
route the proposed Hilgard, Granite &
Southwestern Railroad wants to take; It
Is a good one and, besides, it will pass
over the richest mineral and timber pro
ducing mountains on earth."
