Wednesday, March 28, 1900. THE SUMPTER MINER. GATHERED AT GRANITE. The WE BUY ALL OUR GOODS IN CARLOAD LOTS WHOLESALE AND RETAIL Two Tickets Nominated For the Election April 9. Two municipal tickets have been nomi nated at Granite, Grant Thornburg, head log the citizen's ticket as candidate for mayor, and W. A. White, the school teacher, the people's ticket. Several of the other candidates are on both tickets. The election will be held Monday, April 9. Grant Thornburg will let the contract In a few days for building a large stone and cement reservoir, 30x80 feet, on the hill just above town, tor his system of water works, which he consideres the best of any small town in the state. Large mains will also be laid throughout the town at once. The Gem. Walter Crone was In this week from the Golden Slipper group of quartz claims, where a large amount of development work Is being done. This property con sists of the Golden Slipper, Cinderella, John C, and Fannie C. claims and is owned by Walter Crone, Geo. Weigand, John Kisell and John Coyle. The claims were located last fall and 150 feet of crosscut has been run, striking the ledge at iso feet and crossing in 50 feet wide, carrying values all the way across. The ore is largely sulphurets, carrying gold and sliver, and assays have given the most satisfactory returns. The tunnel has been well timbered throughout, and strikes the ledge at 100 feet below the surface. This mine Is situated nine miles northeast of Granite. The Boulder. An excellent quality of coal has been discovered about half a mile north of town. Pour men, F. S. McComas, J. Van Ruren, J. E. Moran and A. G. Ankeny, have each filed on 150 acres of the land near the find and will begin at once on extensive development work. There is a large ledge of it, and, judging from the samples of coal left at this of fice, the owners have what is as good as a gold mine. With coal beds in close proximity to Granite, wonders never cease In the development of the wonder ful resources of the country tributary to this coming railroad and mining center. The Boulder. Change in Train Time. The Sumpter Valley railway made an other slight change In its time schedule Sunday, March 2$. The morning pass enger now arrives here at 9:20, a differ ence of is minutes earlier, which allows sufficient time In Baker City for travel ers to make connection with the east bound overland train on (he O. R. & N. The running time of the afternoon train has been shortened, arriving ten minu tes earlier, but Is schendeled to depart at the same time, 4:25 p. in., thus making no very material change. The chair car Is promised at an early date and will be a welcome addition to the service. "The Miner" ii the Criterion. The writer Is in receipt of a neat folder telling all about that booming mining camp of Sumpter, Oregon. It is from the press of THE SUMPTER MINER, is neat and well gotten up.
