IT looks as if the action of confess In threatening to deny Mr. Kobe-Ms, of Utah, his mileage, Is prompted by malice. It is iurely a metaphorical hick at a man who Is down and can't help himself. IN all the Northwest Sumpter alone Is experiencing a genuine, substantial boom. Mere the hoped lor activity Is In full blast and its fruits are now being gathered; elsewhere this condition of affairs is only a future possibility, faith and hope being the sustaining power of the army of weary Mailers. I'AKINs, ale abroad In the land and more than one of them ale trading on the splendid reputation the Sumpter district has won as a mining region. There are always lish to be caught by gaudy bait, and a handsomely lithographed stock cer tificate is a thing of artistic beauty, if not a joy forever. OUl neighbors over at Maker City are rejoicing over the victory at the polls last week, in voting bonds for a water system. The mote enterprising, progressive ele ment declare that this is the death knell ol letiogiesslou and mossbackism In that town. If this proves to be the case, then linker City will grow into a town of im portance. A l'l:()l'l.li who can light like the Hoers have done deserve success. All good lighters command admiration; they pos sess moral qualities which makes thetn as near capable of self government as the human family generally leaches, and to wage a brave warfare for libeity and in defense of lireslJes has always secured a lavorable verdict from dvilied public opinion. The enquiry would frequently t ike this ferm: "I have heard considera ble ot Sumpter recently. Where is it ?" One gentleman, an extensive mining operator, stated tli:it the ptevlous day he had participated in a discussion, the point of difference being whether the camp Is In Oregon or Idaho. Seattle Is crowded with men who expect to go to Cape Nome. Many will not be able to get transporta tion, the steamship companies capacity having been booked until early in July. 'I line ate many men hi that section of country who have become tired waiting on hope always deferred and are looking for a more favorable field for operating not a promising one merely, but one that Is realizing the promise of years. Sump ter fills the requirements of such to per fection, and 110 where else would Intelli gently directed missionary work produce such gratifying results. SATUHDAY morning the Oregonlan published alleged dispatches from Baker City and Sumpter, telling of a smallpox epidemic raging there and here. Not sat isfied with making merely the false state ment that the disease is prevalent in these parts, the writer gives details as to quar antine arrangements, stating that health' officers meet all incoming trains and that no one Is allowed to leave Sumpter with out a permit. The Tacoma Ledger pub lished a day or two before the above date an interview with a man who claimed to, have just arrived from Maker, picturing a' horrible state of affairs in that place, as a result of the ravages of the dread disease. tilt: MINER has published a statement signed by all the physicians in Sumpter,'- declaring that there Is no smallpox here. These false reports will work some tem porary injury to the town, but will have little permanent effect. Till: Hast Oregoulan quotes J. A. How ard, who had just returned from Sump ter, regarding the situation here. He tells the story accurately In this language: "The rush expected to begin jis soon as the snow shall go has already begun, and no one can appreciate the situation who has not been on the ground. Men are everywhere. They are. staking claims and prospecting ai d buying property and getting ready tor the summer's work. Mining men are there from South Africa and Mexico and Canada and, In fact, from everv mining country under the sun, men who represent millions. I saw a man at Granite who was going from place to place looking at the country in a quiet sort of way, and finally found he repre sents a I 'euver company of ten millions capital which has mines all over the world. Granite is booming, and things will be lively in that burg next summer." Notice to the Public.
