Wednesday, January 3i79oo. THE SUMPTER MINER. THAT CAVALRY TROOP Sumpter's Rough Riders to Be Mustered in Tomorrow. The troop of cavalry, the organization of which in Sumpter the military board of Oregon has sanctioned, mention of which was made in these columns last week, will be mustered in tomorrow, Thursday, February i. M. E. Thornton, who Is pushing this good thing along, has received notice from Adjutant General Gantenbein that he will be here on that date and will personally conduct the muster and election of officers. Mr. Thornton has sent notices, to those who have indicated their desire to join the troop to this effect. The notice further states that immediately after organization the necessary equipment will be Issued, as the state has the outfits on hand. Dr. Anderson has been making the physical examinations of applicants dur ing the past two evenings at his office and will be there again this evening the last opportunity for the same purpose. It is generally conceded that T. K. Mulr will be elected captain; J. T. Shelton, Wesley Warren and Otto Herlocker are mentioned for the positions of lieutenants, while M. E. Thornton will be the rank ing non commissioned officer. Rich Deposits in Malheur County. All sorts of rumors have gone the rounds concerning the sudden disappear ance and continued absence of J. Frank Shelton during the past ten days. Rut when traced to the "real thing" It was found he had been buried in the wilds of Malheur county, where seven miles from a town of that name is located the Black Hawk mineral claim, in which Frank se cured a one-quarter Interest for himself and partner, Sam Stott, who by the way knows a good thing when he sees It. Mr. Shelton says the Black Hawk adjoins, or is the extension of the Golden Eagle mine, on which much work has been done, demonstrating it to be a valuable property and assuring them by the continuous ledge of free gold bearing quartz, running the entire length of each, that only de velopment Is necessary to make another producing mine. One ledge out of four parallels is said to be 25 feet, carrying J60 values (this In the Golden Eagle) and the country rock runs $7 any where It may be selected. The opportunity to bond the property for $25,000 has been turned down by Stott & Shelton, who, with !.. A. and John Ansell and John Scott, of Malheur, are the entire owners. Town Council Proceedings. The city council put In most of its time at the regular meeting Saturday evening discussing water rates and an empound- ing ordinance. Th: latter was amended "out of shape" and finally enrolled and passed to its second reading. It will probably be enacted at the next meeting. The treasurer reported that the current expense fund was overdrawn about $300. That amount was ordered transferred from the salary fund, which is plethoric. John Austin's bond as marshal, for (400, was approved. E. J. Stewart was paid $361.95 for building hose houses. The city attorney and committeeon streets and alleys were instructed to draft an amend ment to Ordinance No. 26, restricting the use of streets with material by those who are building to one-third of their width.
