THE LIFEWORK OF PETER AND JOHN; SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON, REVIEW John 1:42; 21:1S; 1 Peter 1:3; 1 John 1:1-4. (By J. C. Spencer) lluring the past six months we have been following two porallel lines of thought. We have been studying the gradually growing conception of Christ in the minds of Peter and John, and we have been observing the con tribution which they have made be cause of this conception, to Christian teaching. Their life history in rela tion to Jesus is really what takes place in every life as the vision of Christ grows clearer and larger before them. They see him first as the simple Gali lean peasant teacher. He seaks as Christ, tne Sun of the living God." And through the remainder of the earthly ministry of Jesus, Peter strug gled with this great conception. Some times, as at the bedside of the little daughter of Jairus, it was easy to be lieve. At other times, as when Jesus told of his coming sufferings and death, Peter found himself floundering in doubts and questionings. At the betrayal in the gsnlen, he was mad enough and brave enough to defend his Lord with his life, but the next morning, in the house of the high priest, he denied that he even knew the man on trial. Fifty days luter, with the marvelous experiences of the i irBumtuim siiii appearances oi jesus, iluul in which to live, than any other generatitin has had. In every person. Institution, and act that labor to bring peace anil brotherhood on the earth, And we believe that there are still greater and grander revelations, perhaps for this generation, certainly for those to come. "Beloved, now are the children of God, and it ia not yet made manifest what we shall be. But we know that, if it shall be manifest ed we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he Is." "Peter the Hold" stood to him, and the common people hear him gladly. He performs deeds that stamp him as unique among men. He dies an ingnominipus death and rises triumphantly from the grave, and sends forth a wonderful spirit mto the hears of men that transforms the life of humanity wherever it touches. In a single lifetime he grew in the eyes of men. until he was the "Ancient of Days," the glorious kind depicted in the Revelation of John, the "Word," who "was in the beginning with God, who made all things, and without him was not anything made that made." We must remember that the gospel of John was written long after the ascension of Jesus, and, besides re cording the historical facts of his life. records also the philosophical conclu sions at which John had arrived after long years of contemplation. John would not, indeed could not, have and faced a mob in Jerusalem and charged them with the death of Jesus, but prcolaimed that God had raised him, "because that it was im possible that he should be holden -by death," and announced that only through the name of Jesus was there salvation, for "there was none other name under heaven, given among men, whereby we must be saved." Still Peter was a Jew, and hampered by the limitations of Jewish national nar rowness, and needed the vision on the was i housetop in Jopna, recorded in Acts 10:0143, to reveal to him the world wide mission of the gospel which he had been commissioned to preach. And so we find htm writing just before his martyrdom, "And the God of all grace, who called you unto his eternal glory in Christ, after that ye have suffer ed a little while, shall himself per fect, establish, strengthen you." Christ written tne nrst eigntcen verses oi wal a revelation, a call from God, to his gospel during the life-time of Jes- endurance, suffering, even death; but us, nor could he have written that through him they of that generation marvelous epitome of the gospel, John and we of this, should be perfected. 3:16-21. But as the years passed, strengthened and established, and the great events of the Master's And the end is not yet. It is pos life were seen in their relation to each sible to have a grander conception of other and the events of history, like the Christ and his work today than a gigantic mountain the mighty CVer before, even as we have a great Christ, the Son of God, towered above er world, physical, mental and spir the "the mightiest of the mighty and . the holiest of the holy," until he filled all their thoughts. The same process went on in the life of Peter. One day his brother Andrew brought him to Jesus, who looked upon him and said. "Thou art Simon, thou shalt be called Peter." From that moment, Simon was the constant companion of Jesus. Day and night he watched him, absorbing his spirit, receiving his instruction, yield ing himself to the wonderful power of the new teacher, until one day, un der the questioning of Jesus himself out of the mass of confiicing opinion concerning him, Peter arrived at a new conclusion, not revealed unto him by flesh and blood, but by the Father in heaven; namely, that Jesus the ' Kazarene was none other than "the REAL SUMMER FURNITURE Very Comfy Chairs in a Host of Different Shapes, Made of Reed Fiber The Keed fiber mates a sub stantially strong chair, yet light lo weight.
