INDUSTRIAL SLACKING
A break in clothing prices is expected before long, as
a result of increased supplies of raw material and the turning
of the factories from war work to peace work. A definite
announcement to this effect has been made by the federal
food administrator.
. Nobody can be sure, however. For there is another
factor which is just as important as the cost of raw wool and
cotton and the full use of equipment It is the spirit of
labor. There are disquieting reports along that line.
The workers in the cotton and woolen mills and cloth
ing factories are not striking, and apparently are not contem
plating strikes, but they are reported to be doing, very gen
erally, something quite as bad in its-effect on the output of
their energy instead of being a stimulant. With wages twice
as high, many of them are not working much more than half
the time. This is not true of the majority, but it is true of
enough of them to make a serious handicap on the produc
tiveness of the mills and factories.
' The short-sightedness of such conduct is hard to under
stand, from the standpoint of patriotism or of personal thrift
or self-respecting loyalty to one's job. If the workers in
these and other industries could only see the interdepend
ence cf all industrial work, and their own relation to the
prices they complain of, surely they would take a different
attitude. It lies in their power not only to put themselves
ahead financially by earning full wages and savins while
the saving is good, but also to benefit themselves and their!
teuow-workers in other occupations by increasing produc
tion and lowering prices all along the line.

GOOD SENSE AND HEALTH i
Recent vital statistics indicate that 19.19 was a record;
health year. Mortality rates in many communities were far '
lower than during the war years which was to be expected
and also somewhat lower than in pre-war years.
One of the reasons given for this is that the general i
public really learned a lesson from the influenza epidemic)
of .1918. Children and adults alike have begun to heed the:
old advice against couehine and sneezing oDenlv. and reallvl
to make good use of pocket handkerchiefs to cover up those
germ-spreading explosions. Also, the learned to enjoy
fresh air and to take positive measures to get some of it
while waking or sleeping. They abandoned the old careless
and indifferent attitude toward the "common cold" and be
came willing to exercise common-sense precautions for their
own protection, which incidentally protected others than
themselves.
Possibly "the general prosperity of the waee-earnine
class enabled families to take better care of themselves. Cer
tain it is that many of the boys in the army and navy im
proved their health in the service. Health officials were put
on their mettle to protect the public, and they learned effici
ency as they never had before.
This year is not starting off so well, perhaps, in regard
to general health. But even the flu which gives signs of be
coming epidemic is not so virulent as that of 1918, and it
may be possible with continued good sense and co-operation
on the part of private individuals and public health workers,
to make another good record in a low mortality rate.
