PHONE 96 ALBANY, OREGON, FRIDAY, JANUARY 23 A POLICY OF VIOLENCE The speaker of the New York Assembly, in announcing the suspension of five Socialist members,.. explained their alleged disqualification for the office as follows: "You have been elected to a platform that is absolutely inimical to the best interests of the state of New York and of the United States." A non-Socialist New York newspaper aptly replies: "This is what every political party says about the political platform of every other party. ' The conclusion is inescapable that "if the action of the New York Assembly can stand as a precedent, representa tive government has ceased to exist, because all the rights of the minority have been destroyed." It is not befriending Socialism or Bolshevism to point out the facts in this remarkable case. It is doing a neces sary service to true Americanism. ' The platform of the Socialist party was adopted in 1917. It has been unsparingly criticised, by this newspaper and most other newspapers in the United States. But subscrip tion to that platform, even in war time, has never been branded as criminal. Men subscribing to it were elected to the New York legislature last year and the year before, and were admitted without question. It is a bad platform, but it is not unlawful. As matters stand, the Socialist oartv is a leeallv recop nized political party, and its candidates have standing ac cordingly. To pronounce them disqualified for public of fice is for majority parties to deny the right of minority parties to representation. Such a policy nullifies all our fine appeals to the radic als to seek the attainment of their purposes through orderly political action, and drives them to violence as the only means left them. THE WIDENING CHURCH "An almost revolutionary extension" of the church's work and plan of action is planned for the Woodland Ave nue Presbyterian church qf Cleveland by its pastor, Rev. Joel B. Hayden. The church is to be retained as a mere nucleus, it is said, of the community activities which are to encircle it. A "community council' is to be organized. The whole plan is based on the Cincinnati Social Unit organiza tion which has been working so satisfactorily for about three years in the Mohawk-Brighton district there. Radical, industrial and civic groups are to be represent ed on the Community council. The church building is to be opened for all sorts of meetings, forum extensions and as semblies of all kinds. A community club as a substitute for the saloon is one of the contemplated innovations. Groups of foreigners may hear speakers in their own language. This will be in the way of Americanizing, too, for such dis cussions will emphasize the advantages of American politic al methods. There are plans for playgrounds and recreational activi ties of all kinds included. There is to be a Sunday evening forum and a weekly or bi-weekly paper. All these arrange ments sound constructive, democratic and admirable. The Sunday morning and mid-week meetings will be religious services. Otherwise, all the activities are to be social and undenominational. ' - There is no question but that the church has a long way to go in keeping up with public affairs. It loses membership and power for good by hanging on to things of small human consequence while the tides of modern life roll past its doors unperceived. buch an opening of the doors as this no doubt - Sporting" Notes : ; Mrtropoliten fight fans art looking forward with eager Interest to the second meeting between Jimmy Wilde and Jack Sharkey, at.
