August Kruger Taken to Portland Sanitarium August Kruger one of Benton coun ty's prominent farmers was taken to a sanitarium in Portland today for treatment. Kruger has been on the unfortunate list for several, years having jumped off the Willamette wagon bridge Into the river several years ago in an attempt to commit suicide, bat was rescued. Hawker returned from Salem last night where h- had been to attend the trial of William Norland of Idahna who was on trial for killing; deer out of aeawn, Harlrnd was fined in the circuit court for $450, and costs. Last night when he retired Clayton placed his clothes on a trunk in front of the . window. About 7" o'clock this morning the Claytons were aroused by the flash of a light in the room. At first they ' thought nothing of it, but the thought i soon struck Mr. Clayton and he jumped out of bed to find that his ' trousers had been searched, his gold ; watch and between' $30 and $40 in money missing. He ran out of the door in time to see a figure hasten ing down the atairway in the dark ness. He gave trie alarm and the po lice were notified, but there is no way of identifying the culprit: I Mr. Clayton believes that the-thief waa replacing his trousera when the light waa seen and is thankful for the favor of leaving him something to wear at least. Charges that Attorney General Polmer "had a plain can of cold feel' when he failed to appear before the House rule committee to explain the need of further anti-sedition legisla tier., were made today by Representa tive Rodenburg, of Illinois, republi can. To Adjust Ship Claims WASHINGTON, Jan. 23 The Sen ate passed the bill authorizing the shipping board to adjust the claims of wooden shipbuilders growing out of the cancellation of contract. The bill now goes to the house. The board estimated that the measure would af fect $15,000,000 in claims. The Circuit Court Adjourns After Brief Session Circuit court adjourned last night following the trial of F. J. Bartels against T. A. McCullough an! oth ers for the foreclosure of a lein on mine in the Blue River district for services rendered in the development of the mine. The testimony was in traduced in the form of written briefs and taken under advisement by the judge who will probably render a de cision in the near future. The case of J. Ed. Spahner against J. J. STEINER RESIGNS FROM PRISON Salem Man Named Warden of Penitentiary; Olcott Vetoes Salary Bills SALEM, Ore, Jan. 23 By A. P. Dr. R. E. Lee Steiner today relin quished the wardenship of the state jienitentiary with the Governor", con sent and returned to his former posi tion of superintendent of the State Hospital for the Insane. The governor immediately names Louis M. Compton. state paroli offi cer, hs warden. Pcrcey M. Varney. who resigned Monday as Chief of Pol ice of Sulem, succeeds Compton as parole officer. Dr. L. F. Griffith, who has been acting as superinten dent of the state hospital resumes his post as assistant superintendent. Salary Bill Vetoed SALEM, Jan. 23-Govemor Olcott today vetoes the bill authorizing the state highway commission to increase the highway engineer's salary, which is now $5,000. The governor vetoed all salary bills. Delinquent Taxes To be Advertised February 6th Alt delinquent taxes of real estate in the county will be published Feb ruary 8th, reports Sheriff Kendall to day. Those desiring to escape the penalty of the law should get busy and pay up before that time. Then list is not published in the papers as under the old order of collecting taxes but simply printed in bill form and? posted in the leading centers of the: county. All property not paid on be fore the specified date will be sold to the county or individuals for delinqu ent taxes subject to the original own er redeeming the property before a specified time and paying the addi tional costs. No action wilt be taken at thia date. Mgr. W. 31. Cook Sells . Two Car Loads of th e Farmers Stock W. M. Cook, manager of the Linn county co-operative livestock associa tion, returned from Portland last night where he sold two car loads of hogs, one deck of sheep, and one cow at top prices. He received 16 cents per pound for the hogs, 15 1-2 cents for sheep and 10.35 for the ojiw. Mr. Cook reports business good in his line. At the, ir.esting last night a com mittee was appointed on transporta tion and one t sec.r.! t band to as sist in making the occasion one to be recogauized allaloug the line. The Newport Elks have securred a hall as large as the' auditorium of the temple here and al preliminary ar rangements are being made at New port to receive the Albany delegation in royal style. Forty-two candidates are now on the Waiting list to be Initiated and others are in tight who may soon come into the fold. Two candidates were Initiated last night and the re gular order of business was carried out, followed by the usual feed. A large number Is expected to go to Newport and every effort will be made to secure reasonable transpor tation and accomodation- after reach- 'n Newport.
