' Building Burns Fast William Batis, a former member of the fire department, was eating in the Imperial Cafe when the alarm was sounded, and rode hia bicycle to the location of the fire. The fire depart ment was not there s he rode back towards the hall where he met Bruce Ellis. The two took the auto truck to the nearest hydrant and soon got a line of hose laid. Other firemen soon appeared and the steanj engine arrived shortly after. However, the Ir.ilding was well along towards de struction before water waa brought to play. Batis succeeded in saving tflree sawa valued at $100 each. la. Total Loss The fire completely destroyed the mill, burned away part of the dock adjoining the S. P. track, burned two wagons on the dock, nearly a carload of ties which had been cut and were about ready for shipment, the flume and other material about . the mill Roner Brothers' warehouse adjoininr the mi)l caught fire and about $150f damage was done to the building and contents. A quantity of box shooks oak and walnut lumber was stored there, some of which was burned and seme badly damaged. One thousand d'uars' insurance was carried. Millers Have Losa The mill was owned by Dr. Hill who places his loss at $4,000 and no insur ance was carried on the roper'-. The plant wns leased to Art Miller and scr. who lost heavily in materials, tools, etc. The fart that a light rain was fall Ing and that the wind was from the southwest prevented a serious disas ter. Had the wind been blowing from the north it would have been almost impossible to have kept the fire from spreading to the Hammond Lumber vards across the track, where more than ,v.non1 f,..j l-Vr is The 0.
